To me he does seem to know what he's doing, he just piles on the marketing BS a little too heavy. I'm sure much of what he talks about in his videos is only there for the videos sake. At the end of the day all that matters is whether or not you're happy with the radios performance.
I've been...
IMHO the RF gain knob has to be one of the most underrated functions on a radio, learning how the RF gain, squelch and volume work when all set to work together can do wonders for your receive.
I don't have one of these so take this with a grain of salt but if I'm not mistaken an R-1000 only goes up to about 30 MHz, are you sure the display isn't showing kHz?
I believe Captain Killowatt has one of these, I'm sure he can give you all the ins and outs of that radio.
I never tried it but there's a real old school trucker trick that I would like opinions on, mostly just out of curiosity.

If he says anything that would help identify who he is on the air and you don't mind playing dirty you could record him and transmit the recording on other bands yourself, the trick is to not get caught doing it.;)
A basic SDR receiver will let you listen in on everything with a minimum of fuss, then once you know what's going on with the various bands you can decide what you really want to pursue.
I think the first thing you need if you want to play with improving your audio is the ability to accurately monitor what you're transmitting, something like an SDR would give a good idea of what you're actually putting on the air. Then once you know where you are now you can choose your...
