Some Old School Ideas for Dipoles and other Wire Antennas

Fan dipole or extra wire to achieve a match for high impedance line? Nevermind, it helps to read ALL of what people write. Nice antenna! The end support looks well designed. Hopefully it'll hold up in the weather!

    lightning rod vs antenna

DC grounded antennas work as lightning rods. Once.

New to HF (list of my mistakes)

Why don't you make use of the AH4 and just run a big random wire antenna? ~100 ft should be a good amount.

1 Outlet In My Radio Room....

Run some new wire. If I had my choice, I'd run a 60A 220v sub-panel to my shack so I have plenty of juice, and room to hook up 1.5 kw of fun.

Best way to use the transformer

Two for 2200v. Less complex is always better. You'll pay a little more, but it'll be worth it.

Just erected my Ringo ranger, have a few questions

That's exactly it. I don't view losing 1/2 s-unit as such a big thing with 2m VHF-FM, because you're either in range, or you're not. You're not competing with atmospherics either. LMR600 or Heliax just isn't worth the extra hassle and cost of both materials and tooling, while even then, you...

Just erected my Ringo ranger, have a few questions

I'd run LMR-400 out to 150 ft. The losses don't matter as much to me, because I don't run big amps on 2m.

    Break in tubes

If it's an older amp, monitor the filament voltage. Higher voltage than recommended will severely shorten tube life.

    Tektronix 453 Oscilloscope, replacement probes?

I won't be poking around HV a lot. This will mainly be used for monitoring my station output along with a frequency counter. However, I may use it on occasion to ensure caps are working as they should, and ensuring AC ripple is kept to a minimum. Heck, it may even see some work outside to...

    Tektronix 453 Oscilloscope, replacement probes?

I'm looking at buying a working Tektronix 453 oscilloscope. No probes included though. What would you gentlemen suggest as an inexpensive replacement? (Less than $50 shipped ideally) I know you can get a Chinese 10x probe for $10, but I'm a little leery about the quality.

Will the FCC ever raise the legal Tx limit?

For the $150-$200 for a 2510, it may be worth it to save up to $350-$500 for an FT100, FT857, IC817, etc. All-band, usually with 2m/70cm as well, all-mode (SSB/AM/CW/FM), as well as a being a properly built amateur transceiver.

Will the FCC ever raise the legal Tx limit?

Yes I did see your screenname, I meant it as a blanket statement. One thing you quickly learn with all bands...watts don't get out, antennas do. ;) Building a 25w amplifier would be a fun project. I advise an external amplifier over internal amplifiers always. Heat is the death of...

Will the FCC ever raise the legal Tx limit?

Because people are stupid and would kill themselves. That's the general theory anyways. If you want to play around with the airwaves, get your ham ticket. Going over 1.5 kw is a foolish endeavor anyways.

    Family radio comm idea

GMRS, and you can use mobile radios up to 50w. 50w into a 5/8 wave magnet mount is pretty effective for base-to-mobile comms.

questions about restoring old tube receiver

The ratings are usually listed on the capacitor. More volts is fine, if not better in some cases. You will not see a performance benefit though, unless the radio is operating right at the maximum. Capacitance, +/- 20% is the accepted way for old caps...they were barely that range of...

Will cb radios ever reach the popularity it did in the 70's and 80's

Perfect. Now we just need to add: Quality FCC type acceptance Although it would be nice if the FCC raised the watt limit to 25w.
