Antenna Specialists Super Magnum

I might try and use your length dimensions as compared to a SP500 5/8 or the CLR2 which might be closer in length to the Super Mag. I really need more dimensions to try and do an accurate model. If you can help further that would be great.

What are the dimensions for the C shaped mounting bracket?


Is the overlap for all the tubing used about 2" inches, as you've noted for the radials?

Is the radiator base tubing, 41" inches, starting at the bottom of the C shaped mounting bracket and extending all the way up to the top end of the base tube where the next 48" inch section of radiator is inserted?

Are the next 3 x 48" sections, as installed, at 46" inches exposed metal or close?

So, if the overall length is from the bottom of the C shaped mounting bracket all the way to the tip, does this measurement include the circular wire top hat dimensions. Or is the overall only up to the tip of the tubing...right below the top hat not including the dimension?

What are the dimensions for the top hat? Tube or wire size, shape and radius or diameter.


I especially need the height dimensions from the bottom of base mount to the top of the bottom insulator where the base of the radiator sits.

Is there also an insulator at the top of the mounting bracket which the radiator passes through?


I need to know if there is an insulator inside the coil area, and what is the diameter and length of such an insulator.

I need to know all of the dimensions for the coil and the spaces between parts in the area. Example: number of full and partial coils, height, width, and spacing between the wires...including the diameter of the wire.

Let me know how and what the coil is attached to...at the top and bottom, and are these connections even with or higher than the overall length of the 10.25" coil at both ends?

All these dimensions around the coil are really important to getting a model with the matching coil included, made correct. The 10.25" height for the coil is just one dimension for a 3 dimensional object. I need height, width, length and wire size if you can help.

Don't worry about it though if your time is short. I thank you for your help anyway.

I think I will try a trial and error using the 10.25" coil of different sizes and use your overall length for the radiator and radials and see if I can get close to making the model respond to tuning as a model. We know it does good in the real world, and it a model is to be consider good...it should be able to duplicated the real antenna within reason.

I can make an educated guess as to some of these measurements...it can't be too much different from other High Gain verticals with the HG raised radial mounting bracket.

Again, does the antenna have a top hat? If so what are those dimensions?

Hey Commish, I know you are busy, so don't go to any trouble to get the dimensions we discussed above.

I've done some research on the subject, and I'm convinced that the Super Mag, except for the matching device and having 4 radials instead of 3, is virtually the same as the CLR2. The overall lengths are within a 1/2" of each other.

Here is a video showing the CLR2 1/2 wave vs. the SP500 in the box side by side and we can see there is a difference in length of a couple of feet. The reason this is important I think is because I've heard folks claim the CLR2 was similar to the Radio Shack antenna that was similar...excepting it was a .625/.64 wave antenna.



I'm working on the model for a Super Magnum at the moment and based on the dimensions you gave me earlier for your S Mag...those dimensions are good enough. I don't need the coil dimensions. The reasons is, because a recent discussion in another thread with "The DB" about adding a physical matcher to an Eznec model...does not produce beneficial results for the model...plus I see skewing of the patter as a result.

Also the performance information that I see with these models for the I-10K with the matcher added that DB and I discussed, shows the maximum gain at 4.19 dbi @ 10* degrees. While the model without the matcher shows 4.07 dbi @ 8* degrees. IMO that is a difference that could possibly matter a bit...due to the reduction in the maximum take off angel for the I-10K without the matcher model.

So, I don't see adding a physical matcher to a model as having any advantage.

Most of my other models of CB antennas I've produced over time do not have a matcher attached in the model. I won't be modeling antennas again trying to add a physical matcher to the model.

If I'm ever able to add matching to a model it will be using the matching feature that is part of the Eznec program similar to what "The DB" is able to do using his 4Nec2 software.

The CLR2 antenna's radiator is also noted in the manual to be 230" less the top hat extensions. So, we have a shorter 1/2 wave vs. a longer 5/8 wave and that should produce a little better gain result, and maybe at a little less angle to the horizon. We will see latter.

I also figured out that the difference in lengths between the SP500 at 266.50" inches vs. the Super Mag/CLR2 at 231.25" inches is roughly 35.25" inches and that is the difference in the base element lengths for these two antennas.

Of course as I noted earlier in this thread, there are differences in the matching to consider as well, but I will no longer include a physical match for my models.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread. I am trying to tune this antenna according with specs given here. something is weird with this thing. Without radials, it tunes close to 28,500 , SWR close to 1.2. As long as I install the radials, it resonates on 44,750 MHz. When I touch the coil,it goes back to
28, 500.

Does anyone here know how many turns the May hung loading coil should have ?

I finally found out what was wrong. After the tap I wounded 6 turns. I had to replace the enameled wire again, on the fourth turn I solder the tap, then added 9 more turns. This time it gave me the following results:

Bandwidh = 1,650KHz

Those measurements were done on a 10 feet mast on the backyard. Let’s see what is going to happen tomorrow when I put it on the roof.
