Anybody use switching power supplies?

Id drop 2 new ones in there. Look like hp possibly. Im sure someone could refit this with 2 new switchers.

Funny you say HP as I have seen some very similar looking hp units, will hang on to it till I find a few new ones

Well replacements were dropped in front of my door when I arrived home from work, so I hope to get them in on the weekend.

I know that I have seen tons of videos where people run their radios from old/used PC server switching power supplies. A lot of people say they don't see a noise problem, some say they do.

have any of you used one in radio service and, if so, what was your experience?

The reason I am asking, hook line and sinker..... I just picked up a used HP Server power supply on Ebay. This particular model is "screaming easy" to convert to 13.8V DC (snip & jumper OR....just jumper bypass a single 100 ohm resistor...and adjust the max voltage pot! This model is WELL KNOWN to work this way!
When done it will serve 13.8 VDC @ about 50 A max. I won't be using NEAR that.

The supply and shipping totalled $21.42 and I saw that as "worth it" just for the try.....

I have an MFJ 4125 which I have had many years.It's just used for a dual band mobile & some small accessories no heavy duty stuff.

You are right. Talking about DPS600PB I mentioned before. For 20$ I get PS with over current, over voltage, temperature protection. Designed to run 24/7 full duty cycle in expensive equipment.
Small and lightweight.
No more linear PS for me.

I have some DPS600PB and have seen many mods with people using potentiomters to get to 13.7V, or completely disable OVP. Can you share a link to step by step instrucitons on how to adjust OVP properly for stable use? It would be MOST appreciated!

I have used switching power supplies for about 10 years. The earlier ones I got were noisy but didn’t realize it right away so I just used them to run other stuff. Just recently I bought 100 switching power supply so I could run everything I have on one amp and it works fantastic. If you buy them from the same manufacturer, you could piggyback them also like if you have 2 50’s and together in parallel, you can get 100 A or close to it. I have a Texas Star 500 in the house on a 50 and 35 amp, switching power supplies hooked together, by the same manufacture. It drives the amplifier very very well and nothing gets hot. It’s warm but not hot.
 
Something I did wanna share I forgot about my last comment, try to keep the voltage around 13 or so I was running mine at like 14.5 trying to get the most out of the amplifier and all it did was fry the finals. I talk on sideband 99% of the time and it’s still fried the finals. My Radio Guy was telling me it’s cause I’m over driving them.

I use MEGA-WATT S-700-12 supplies to power my TX600 amp. Four in parallel @13.9vdc. provides 200 amps. Amplifier does 800W peak and the supply doesn't drop a tenth of a volt under load. Also use a 1 Farad capacitor as a current sink.
Absolutely no hash or other supply noise. Fans are quiet too.

This is what I use. Megawatt 700 x 2 @14.2v for my DX-500. I use a separate one @14.5v for my Stryker 955

That's not true. Mobile amps are meant to run in an automotive environment. A vehicle runs between 14.4v and 15v when the battery is at full charge and the vehicle running. These voltages will not blow your finals.

    So I have a cobra 138xlr and the meter dose not work... It dose not key up and signal dose not work.... It is not stuck it the meter moves freely. now wires are resoldered on both ends...So now that do I look at. Could it be a diode or a transistor?
