Anytone Ares 2

Guys, please exercise a great deal of caution here. Some of the information he gave in the video and what he thinks the menus are for, is incorrect.

And that second harmonic does not exist on my radios here. (Maybe this harmonic is because of the cap change OR the "alignment" of incorrect settings).

Also 50w+? No.

So please be very careful.
I have 50+ watts from my Ares II. But....I modded the PA.

That is a different story, of course!
I did this months ago and discussed it here. I also tried the 68pF cap at that time, which is intended to match the new "upgraded" devices used to increase power. It did diddly squat. I am going to do the same mods to the 5555N2 when I get around to it. I am curious as to what that sucker will do.

That's exactly the thinking in regards to it my friend. I'm no technician but I caught what was looking suspect.

I don't have a spectrum analyzer in the shop but I can tell the untouched areas 2 I have has out of band emissions, It bleeds over on my computer speakers when keyed which the crtss6900v does not. I have npc off on the areas II because it looks super trashy on the o scope

See below: This is an ARES 2 that I have here. It is very clean, at better than -70dBc on the second harmonic.

I have posted some scope pictures (NPC OFF) in an earlier post that are very clean as well: https://www.worldwidedx.com/threads/anytone-ares-2.265547/post-832392

RFI into computer speakers, does not mean the TX is spurious. It means your speakers are susceptible to RFI, due to rectification. Without a spectrum analyzer, you can't claim the TX is spurious.

Forbid I talk about the quality control on an anytone, all are perfect I stand corrected.
(but my other radios don't bleed on those speakers even when running far more power)

I should probably trade my SA in, for a set of your speakers, they seem to be much more sensitive. ;)

Your issue does seem to point to a different problem though, unless you happen to have an ARES 2 with a fault that we haven't seen before.

Get your hands on a spectrum analyzer and have a look at the spectral purity. At that point, we should discuss it.

Since we are talking about an unknown quantity, perhaps it is your other super high power radios that are dirty, that your speakers like. Maybe because your RF energy is going to spectrum in your speaker's happy place, not in the 11m band.

I messed with the U1 setting, which dropped the hanging S5 reading. It is definitely better now. SSB AGC is still too slow though.
Mine had the the S5 hanging meter as well. Changed it in the service menu from th
I don't find the ACG a problem at all personally. Importantly, I have found that the AGC response (audio response and recovery time) is not directly related to the S meter movement. The S meter fall time is too slow, it's a known issue, but the receiver AGC is great for me. Do you find the same?

FYI, on the front panel PCB there is an electrolytic "damping" capacitor connected across the S meter. You can remove this cap (or cut the track) to speed up the meter movement. However, will the meter eventually fail due to hitting its end-stops harder? I don't know, time will tell!

Mine had the hanging s5 meter that hardly ever moved as well.
I went into the U1 setting, helped quite a bit. Not hanging at s5 now.
The meter "dampening" sucks for sure. Way too low. I may play with the electrolytic cap behind the front panel, that Pez talked about. Good info guys.
Thanks

Especially today! It is not like it was 20 years ago and computer speakers had metal shielding inside the plastic case designed to keep out RFI. Those days are gone.

An affordable modern scope likely has FFT which while not a true spectrum analyzer it good enough for most with out needing to hunt down and expensive piece of gear you might not use often! Different it you need it to make a living.

Great bargain, but I wish we could make em swing. Kind of a dead fish on am if you have a high drive amp.
By the right radio or amp for each other.

Plenty of people try to use a Stryker 955 with an amp that is not designed for that much drive. Likewise a HD amp was not designed for a 3 watt radio! Not secret information you need to join a secret society to learn!

It is not at all hard to find a radio with through componets that can be modified to swing with supressed carrier, asymetric modulation, NPC etc....They might not be cheap or have the freq. coverage you want and they might need to be repaired and modified but still plenty of them on ebay and facebook market place!

No secret it is not an AM beast! These run from $149 to $179 all day long! Considering the price of milk, egg's, butter, burger and gasoline this is almost free in 2024 de-valued USD with Jimmy Carter like inflation! From day one everyone mentioned that these do not have great AM audio. The Stryker 955 is probably the only radio that is a beast on AM from this company with the 5555 also being very good on am.

I am sure the factory could make them an AM beast out of the box but they would not want to scavage sales of other models and the sales of models they make for other clients!

It is amazing that you can get a radio that will do what 10,11 and 12 meter coverage, AM/FM/SSB, 50 watts PEP, is actual stable on SSB, has DSP on RX/TX, echo, +10kc switch for $179 with a magnet mount base and free shipping! That is what I paid just the other day from Radioddity for the bundle. People want to complain in 2024 that it is not the perfect AM radio???

I would say let me know when someone at Galaxy or Ranger or Uniden or Cobra offer something better for a shipped to your door price of $179 or better! That $179 price has to included a SO-239 magnet mount base as well!

There are people that can probe this radio and find ways to modify it but most of them have no desire to and no reason to!! The ones that will do it likely will not share their discoveries for free because they need to make bank! Plus who would pay big $$$ to modify a throwaway no-warranty $179 radio??

How many of us that will buy the Aries II are in need of a radio because we do not own anything else to use? I am thinking none of us on this site are radioless and desperately need something affordable just to get a foot in the door!

I think we all know what radio's are AM beasts and are easy to mod to be even bigger on AM on RX and TX! On the other hand finding an export radio that is cheap and SSB stable that is almost impossible to find at the price you can get an Aries II!!

The guys that take the time to figure out the new and unusal on this site that then share it for free are incredible people that truly love the hobby and community! Anyone can be troubled to figure something out for $$$!

Cheer's to all!

P.S. You can nutralize sulphites in wine with house hold hydrogen peroxide! A pipet or eye dropper 1 drop per 100ml to 150ml will do it for most people. I getting ready to uncork a bottle might now! Mix and then let it breath for a few minutes!
