Mine came with a mic setting of 30, if I turn it all the way up I can really hear it pushing on the limiter. The am modulation was already turned almost all the way up. Small benefit by maxing it out, it is still only 100%. The biggest problem I found is that the stock mic key is really noisy at mic level 36 (max). So I opened it up and the culprit is the big spring around the switch plunger. I removed the spring and doused the whole thing with deoxit. Some improvement, I want to make it into a desk mic to get the switch away from the mic element. Adjusted the echo to make it barely noticeable and did not touch anything else. I will probably put this in my truck in place of the 5555. The 6666 being a lot smaller, will fit between the visors of my little ranger better. But I am still having fun listening to myself talk on my Cobra 148 monitor radio and making all the adjustments possible to see what does what. This thing sounds great on the air.
I am running mine at the factory setting(30) and getting great reports.
I really like this rig, my Lincoln mk1 has now gone into storage.

32 is about the max mic gain on SSB before it gets a bit hairy on sideband. These are great little radios. Hard to beat at the price point and those with ver 3 firmware go down to 24.8 mhz with a couple of extra bands. My 2 are both version 2 unfortunately.
I run mine at 30 also with a Turner +3B hand mic and get good reports. Nice little radio.
Have any of you heard of a Version 4 that has added K & L bands for 12M coverage plus the CTC board installed?

Thanks for your reply; I have been salivating over the CRT since I became aware of it. Searching for more reviews on it led me to read that an AT-6666V4 might be coming available.

We've had the V4 CRT SS9900 & AT6666 for a good while now here in the UK.
I recently returned a V4 CRT SS9900 back with faults out of the box, & exchanged it for a President McKinley.
There's lots of reports of the 9900 malfunctioning over here after a while, but there's also similar reports of people having them a while without any issues.

I've had the quad 6 and 9900 for 2 yrs now with no issues. Both are good performers.
I have run across several guys on Facebook groups that are asking about programming because ( as they say) the channel frequencies are messed up.
One thing you have to learn is that if you are on a channel, switch to frequency mode, change the frequency then go back to channel mode , the radio remembers the new frequency when you switch.
So, if you are on 38 and go to frequency mode, move to 27.405 then switch back to channel mode channel 38 is now 27.405.
This it causing a lot of new guys headaches.
You have to be aware of the changes you make.

Hmmmm now you've got me scratching my head.... Don't think that's ever been an issue with mine or my frequency is all screwed up but don't know it...
Mine does the same as you mentioned, thought it was kind of annoying, but I just use the freq counter anyways. But great radios for performance out of the box.
