ARRL has asked the FCC to expand HF privileges for Technician licensees to include limited phone privileges on 75, 40, and 15 meters, plus RTTY and digital mode privileges on 80, 40, 15, and 10 meters.

This is Totally Ridiculous...Wonder how many $$$ the Big 3 Mfg's offered the Elitist Father's of Newington if this passes.
OK guys FLAME ON!...but this is really Insane!
Might as well start putting licenses on the back of POST TOASTIES BOXES

I kind of like the rules as they are now. I know there are still Novices and Tech's that have been the same license class their whole life, but I think the current privileges give a Tech enough of a taste of HF to be an incentive to upgrade. Adding more base level privileges just discourages learning and the desire to upgrade.

I agree Gary. Today's society is all about getting something for free and people are too lazy or self-entitled for any kind of incentive programs.

It will make the transition from ch19 to 75m smoother.

I don't like the idea of giving something for nothing but one positive possibility I see is increased use of the advanced and extra portions of the bands. Maybe the guys that have had their general class for decades will upgrade to get away from the crowd. Am I being too optimistic?

Ever consider that they may make the test harder? So many Hams have claimed that the Tech level test is too easy? So, they give more privileges; but also raise the bar on the test. We will see . . .

I can't see the tech test getting harder. I hope it doesn't because I feel the lowest licence class should be easy to achieve for children and people that are interested in the hobby but know little about it. I like to think having a taste of the action will drive the serious people to upgrade.

We're riding a fine line. We can make the test harder and limit privileges to keep the old timers happy and and the bad operators out. Then watch activity decline to the point we all start to lose band privileges or the hobby just dies off. If we just give everyone a licence in a box of cereal we have another issue...we already have that issue on 14.313, 7200 and 75 meters. I didn't mention 11 meters because no one is left there.

To think that an influx of new radio ops on the HF band is going to have a detrimental effect on the hobby is to forget just how many complete A-HOLE extra class hams there are out there.

also, it's not the test that is keeping more people from enjoying HF; it's the huge antennas and expensive radios that keep people from even bothering to take the general class test.

I am a no code extra that pased the test with a Gordon West book. Plenty of people don't like that. I see the potential for positive change here. The negative I see is because of the behavior of a few new operators. Ive also saw the old timers play I to their games and some of them start trouble with the new guys just because they weren't born when there was a code requirement. There have always been bad operators and a-holes.

As a Technician, additional phone privileges on 15, 40 and 75 sounds like a great idea! However, my opinion might change next week.

Am taking the test for my General on Thursday!
