You have to find your niche. It took me a couple of years to find a group that I liked. If you enjoy radio and don't get caught up on the ham vs cb thing there is something in it for you.

If nothing else just get your general ticket. That way you can buy stuff from the ham classifieds without getting the stink eye.:)

No pigtails. No crinoline. No Mary Janes. No training bra. (What could be better?)

CB / ham threads...you know where this is going, right?

I want to like ham radio, but 99.9% of what I hear sounds very boring. I hadn’t listened in a while and tuned into a local 2m net the other night. Bunch of guys answering questions in a round table format about what they ate for each meal that day. Maybe the hobby is exploding in numbers - I don’t actually know - but it’s hard for me to imagine much that Ive heard on the air attracting newcomers.

I guess at least they weren’t on echo mics with roger beeps and fake pingers and other noise toys...that’s the trash CBers are stuck dealing with.

At some point I’d like to get a license because I want to chase some VHF DX, and there’s just no other way to do that.

Anyway, more to the point, I don’t know any CBers that try to talk on ham bands with no license. Most seem to think that’s a good way to get in trouble.

Watching the paint dry? Well, as a group activity the droll and the poker-faced can be heard loading chambers and rotating the cylinder. When they whip it back upright and we hear lockup . . . some of the flat funniest things I’ve heard in this life started out as lost causes.

I’ll upload the net later - I recorded it.

I can’t listen to it again to copy anything as I would rather stab myself in the eye with a pencil repeatedly.

Someone once told me "Boy, there are two types of radio op's in the world: those that like to stir up the bee's nest, and those that take it easy". For years I stirred the nest. I recommend easy..... :sneaky:

Stir the pot is too much fun on 19-AM. Life wouldn’t be worth living given the openings some guys leave.

My favorite are traffic law “discussions” with other drivers. The loudmouths. The, I’m begging to have my hiney kicked, comments which favor the speaker and castigate his target.

1). Ask them if they own televisions. (My favorite of late). Then express awe it was possible they passed any licensure at all. Given that TV is owned by the enemy and is a deadly poison. Every study undertaken & published shows decreased intelligence and sociability.

2). And, it’s sad they hate their families so much. A man would never allow that invader any space. As there are exactly ZERO compelling arguments to have one present.

I trust you’ll think of something to liven up the exchange. Creativity is the hallmark of Christian man’s intelligence. As being on the air with nothing worthy of note is sinful. Willfully stupid = capitulation to Evil.

I love listening to 60 year old men with phone holsters discuss moon bouncing or prostate removal.

If you listen a little longer, you can hear them talk about "really great catheters" or their experiences with Viagra.

Dedlinger: I agree with your assessment. The boring stuff I've heard on ham bands has done a lot to inspire me to stick with CB. The icing on the cake is that there's oftentimes some condescending, smart ass Elmer type who's giving a hard time to every new ham he doesn't recognize. If I want to talk on a ham band, I've got a few licensed friends who are happy to invite me over to help warm up their amplifiers and put their tuners to use.

Kopcicle: I agree with your approach. More operators should follow your example.

So you lie to people?, Why not tell them the truth? If they took the time to contact you, you could at least explain why they are of a lesser quality human than you, and that you KNOW what they need. maybe you could say, "hey I can show you how to get your Ticket"? Or maybe you dont want anyone new in YOUR hobby. What 5k dollar amp do you have , I'm interested in Large Powerful Amps for moon bounces, lol.

Our local Ham Bands are already overrun with Illegal operators who care nothing about Rules or Federal Law and I won’t assist them in their lawlessness. It’s called Freedom of Choice.Only others whom are of the same mind would have any issues with that.I believe in freedom and following the laws of the land and I did 30 years of service as a State Law Enforcement Officer and I still do my part at helping when possible.I do and always will support following the rules and laws even when I may not always agree with them. The law is for everyone not just those who agree with it.

My $5000 amplifier is an ICOM PW-1 which I drive with my ICOM 7600 with the HEIL FIN microphone.
