RCI 2995DX VS. Cobra 2000GTL

pro's and cons?

i know the 2995 is nice cause it covers 24-32mhz and has many ham options and has an output of 200w(?)... the cobra 2000 could have uppers and lowers and can run an amp behind it as to where the rci when the amp goes the radio doesn't TX. anything I'm missing?

I firmly believe that if you're going to run CB frequencies, plus freeband, the Cobra 2000GTL is better. The 2995DX (along with other 10M radios) tend to have more "white noise" and receiver hash than a CB in receive mode. I have ran several of both types on my base, and I have found out that the receive is more quiet with a CB radio, I was able to pick up weaker stations a little better because of the lower noise floor in receive. It's just a matter of what you like more! (y)

~Cheers~

really dislike RCI's receive end.
never seen a cobra 2000gtl in person but if it seems to be the better CB radio plus im sure i can get xtra channels and a slider it is just as good as the rci than it willl just need a linear behind it.

the cobra does not have a vfo and the RCI does, are the cobras even manufactured today? if not I wonder why?

You are getting a very good but very old radio, and parts might be a problem with it,finding them.Thats why i got rid of all my Browning mk3 and 4s...If you run ssb only find a ham rig that has been converted over, not a rci or export radio. You will be happyer. run a Siltronix 1011d and have a spare radio for any part i need, and working on to run whiloe its being worked on...73s de JW

I have a 2995DX, and the receive is annoying. Not at all like my Magnum OmegaForce; it sounds clean in comparison. That is also true of the RCI-2950; too noisy. I had a chance to compare the Magnum 257 HP and the OmegaForce S-45 HP to the RCI's; the Magnums blew them away - IMO. So many people have said that they have the same problem; that is not what I have seen at my end.

I will say this 2995DX has great sounding AM transmit - though. 40-160w dead key/PEP on AM with the 2290 finals. About 130w PEP on SSB. Traded it for a Texas Star 350, as the 2995 had SSB problems. Fixed most of the problems the radio had, just one more to go. Everything else about the radio is fine and dandy; just get annoyed with the receive noise is all.

AS far as the Cobra 2000 goes; they are merely a deluxe version of the 148 GTL. They sound nice and they look pretty with the freq counter and all. But any old fine-running 148 GTL with the 5 pin mic plug is every bit the radio that the 2000 is. In some ways better; as the 2000 must have the PLL chip changed out to the 8719 just to get more frequencies available. The 2000 also has a coarse/fine clarifier knob. But I don't consider that a big deal; do you?

I've worked on/aligned a couple of the 2000's. I think they are more hype than substance. But their receive is a far sight better than the 2995DX. No contest there . . .

own two 706mk2g's but i want a good cb base station ...:)
been stuck between the rci base and the cobra base. iv had my fair share of VFO, and prefer the magnum feel as i have had plenty of those too.
id say a 2000 GTL and a 4 or 6 tube box on the base will smoke a 706 all day on CB bands.
imo just looking for a CB base station instead of using my HF rigs for cb chatter.

eventually will like to invest in the kenwood ts 2000 & a icom 746 pro 3 last but not least the ICOM R-9000 (someday)

If your thinking CB only then go with the 2000. But the power is in the 2995. You will get out by no means. A package deal I might say(2995). 12+ watts vrs 150 watts. which one would you prefer? The noise can be cleaned up some with a Schotchy RX mod. It all depends on how you want it. If price is not an option for you Id buy both and do your own comparison see which one fits you application.

Me Id go with more power. New is also good. Warranty!!!

Given your Original Question..
2995DX or Cobra 2000..

Sorry..i like neither..
Not to say the Cobra 200 wasn't an excellent CB in its day (it was and still is even in todays standards)..

However the 2995DX will smoke the cobra 2000
Yes you can throw an amp on the cobra 2000 ( and can put a amp on the 2995 as well)..

However..

Cobra 2000 does not cut it in todays abilities..
2995DX although is a better transmit radio..not so on receive..

Those 706 MKIIG radios you have easily smoke both the cobra 2000 as well as the 2995DX..

Icom 746 Pro III not bad....but not great either..
Kenwood TS 2000 again not bad but not great either
( i have used both the 746 Pro 3 and TS 2000 )

So...Given you obviously can afford the Hobby...
Why not instead pick up the Icom IC 7000 (which a friend of mine sold his TS 2000 for and got the IC 7000 and loves it )

Or if you really want to go all out then the IC 7700 (maybe the IC 7600... although not much benefit going from the IC 7000 to the IC 7600)..

If you also use VHF-UHF then perhaps the IC 9100 ( although i myself didnt as of yet see its price as worth while )

If..

You only want to decide between the Cobra 2000 or the 2995 DX..
even though the 2995DX gets out much better...it is also a hugh splash box indeed..

Given...
You are looking at Base radios...
It is Not simply the radio, but the antenna anyways..

Anyways...enough for my 2 cents...

well put! :)
the icom 7000 has just too many problems ....
i have a 5/8 wave antenna & a dipole on the base..... rg213u what more could i ask for? more power! i think running a linear behind a 706 is a joke, hince why im in a debate between the 2000gtl and 2995DX.
maybe ill buy both the cobra and rci and than i wont have to choose between them
as for the icoms you listed the wife says NO (loud and proud) cant spend that kind of $ @themoment

p.s the 2995DX is the amp ever goes out sol on TX'ing, how ever i could by pass it. i dont see why not...with a single flip switch

well if ya just wanted cb/ssb id say =2000
if ya want that and freeband id say the 2995 dx
now thats the options you listed now if it were me
id look at the magnum s45hp
or if ya want more power built in
checkout the magnum s9-175
only other better option i see is getting into hf radios

also checkout the icom 718 base about same price as a 2995
and rci does have a new base out basically a 2950 in a box dont
know if the recieve is better in these thoiugh. there was a discucusion
on here about them.i,ll see if i can bring it back up

shucks you already have two great radios with the 706's go with the Cobra 2000 with the freq mods and a amp. i do the same thing i have a Icom 745 and a Yaesu 950 and a Cobra 2000 that i use for regular SSB cb rag chew.also check out the Uniden Washington, i personaly think it's a better radio then the Cobra 2000. i use a Uniden Washington when i get bored with the Cobra 2000. i have the Uniden Washington Modded out as well with extra channels and a unlocked clarifier and a hard wired PDC 256 frequency counter for continous frequency read out. the Cobra 2000 and the Uniden Washington make great freeband radios with the clarifiers unlocked and the freq counters. you will like the receive on the 2000 or washington much better then the 2995dx and i am RCI fan.
