This is so true duckkilla. In order to make that Dollar Bill, people get so darn puffed up defending their way or the highway. And the way folks think that their "credentials", "experience", "degrees", etc make them far, far superior to anything YOU may have learned along the way. PLEASE.

I'd be real careful labeling everyone who doesn't understand how a transistor or tube works as 'clueless'. (or would you prefer thermionic valve?) I'd suggest that you go to Google and do a little research on yourself.

Well it's like this... why in the CB world are there so many self-proclaimed technicians? My favorite is to ask them how a transistor works. Or the old, "Can you explain to me the difference between a tube and transistor?" This is why I talk the way I do... there are only a handfull of people that actually can back up what they say, like Nomad for example. The others are clueless.

Transistors are composed of three parts – a base, a collector, and an emitter. The base is the gate controller device for the larger electrical supply. The collector is the larger electrical supply, and the emitter is the outlet for that supply. By sending varying levels of current from the base, the amount of current flowing through the gate from the collector may be regulated. In this way, a very small amount of current may be used to control a large amount of current, as in an amplifier.

Or did you want to hear it in terms of free holes, free electrons, depletion zone, etc...? Then, let me ask you, what stops a positive-energy electron from radiating a photon and falling into a negative-energy (lower-energy) state?

When a bulb's filament is heated white-hot, electrons are boiled off its surface and into the vacuum inside the bulb. If an extra electrode ("plate" or "anode") is made more positive than the hot filament, a direct current flows through the vacuum. An added electrode ("grid") is between the plate and filament. If a signal is applied to the grid, you have a sensitive "detector" of the signal. In fact, the grid can change (or modulate) the current flowing from the filament to the plate, as in an amplifier.
