CB Antenna choice?

Which would you choose?

Antenna Specialists 410 Big Momma looked good trunk lip mounted on my '70 Plymouth Duster back in the day, but a rear bumper mounted 102" steel whip ate its sack lunch (as well as every other antenna I tried). Can't beat 'em. (y)

As far as the original question goes, I'd get the Skip Shooter. No scientific reason, just happen to like it.

one thing I noticed is the tuning rod your SS had. the SS I've seen have a cheap nail in them.
did you add that yourself?
I was always turned off with that nail.,JMO,
personally I'm a Silverload fan but been look at the SS because they still make them in 6' & 7'

Yes I changed the nail only because i needed a hair more length though. I kind of like the nail because not much so much now but back in the day when they were pretty popular and people used to say Im coming in really good what antenna is it and id say its a 7-foot skip shooter and they go oh the one with the nail, lol. Everybody used to talk about the antenna with the nail but that thing worked good and still does. But I bought the antenna to try that type of antenna and while doing research I found that they have the thickest winding wire, for their 4.5 foot and longer ones which is their higher power rated antennas, than any other i have checked. 7ft has an excellent eff rating in that test, which is basically just to say the longer the antenna the better as the norm.

how many watts is a 102" rated at? Just wondering as online sellers have 500w and 1000w ratings in description.
Yes that is what I have seen as well. I also have seen 5K and 10K when searching years ago. I have also read "As much as your coax can handle". I have seen a friend use a TS Sweet 16 with a 108 inch for years, which is the true length you want for 11 meters. I believe I read its 107.something inches to be exact.

I ran a hot plate with one often but my old tech preached not to put the big box on it. he said that big boxes didn't like all that stainless something about rf not coming off it as well as aluminum. I don't know but would like to.

about the length right, i did the math it's something like 108. 102 wip, 4" spring, 1.5" stud about 1"+ feed. it's close.

I just want to add and I know this is not technical but makes a difference to me. I am noticing when testing the two antennas in troubling areas like buildings, woods, places with high obstructions around me, the Skipshooter is doing up to 1 S unit better both ways than the Predator when tested. This so far is multiple tests with two mobiles going into high obstructed areas on purpose pulling over base and mobiles taking readings and then me switching antennas. Not technical at all, but interesting. Both antennas do well long distance when I shoot skip. Out in the open both hardly a change is noticed when switching. Thought I'd share if anyone else is interested.

A 102" requires a 4" hd spring and the mount which brings it to 108" for 1/4 wave length.

If I were to run duals I would choose 7' skipshooter. I get best out of 102". The 102 SS Whip has outlasted any fiberglass. Reading back when I considered duals, skipshooter got great reports but didn't take limb strikes well.

Most top loads outperform any bottom load or mid load antenna.

Plus, Skipshooter 7’ is cheaper than a 108” and (IMO) puts less of a strain on a mobile mount.

It has quite a bit of flex at speed, even if it can’t take as many hits.

Better to lose the antenna versus the mount tearing away.
