CB CH9 REACT alive and well on Hawaii-5-O ...

I just finished watching this recent episode with Danny stopping a trucker and asking to use his radio for an emergency call. Do you think if you needed to do the same would you get a response or just crickets?

Channel 9? Crickets. I'd have a better chance to call another operator & have them relay to 911 dispatch. Heck, did that 20+ years ago, was 3rd on scene at a vehicle vs power pole. No cell service for those who had them.

Alot of Mexico uses chl 9 for some reason. That's all I hear on 9. Have tried before in situation like Walterjn, but no response.

We had CREST down here in Oz. Local guy near me monitoring was a total fruitcake. Used to jump on adjacent channels telling everyone to vacate as they were risking lives. He ended up getting busted for placing objects on rail tracks....

Monitoring 9 when I was a kid during a snow day off school, heard a lady calling out that she had slid off into a ditch. I responded back and asked if I could call someone for her (days before cell phones). She gave me the # to her son. I called him up and relayed the location.. he headed that way with his truck to assist. Best part about the story was that I wasn't the only one monitoring. I had an Illinois state trooper ask for the information on the incident. This was back when ISP ran around with K40s or Wilson 500s on the trunk. Trooper could hear me on my base but not hear her. I passed along her info to him as well and let him know she was not injured. All parties involved were happy.. I felt like I (12 yrs old) saved the day!.. oh and I was pretty stoked to talk to a trooper on the cb.. again (12 yrs old). This is my one and only ch 9 glory story.

here in the tampa bay area i would believe the driver calling 911 on his cell phone besides channel 9 here is puertoricans/cubans/mexicans/well hell any thing south of the border all day and all night

You have better luck talking skip on 09 than anyone local.
Ill have to experiment with this.

I believe 1996 or 1997 is the last time I tried using channel 9. I called in an accident and got a response from. REACT operator: it had just been phoned in and the REACT operator had monitored the dispatch on his scanner.

It was pretty active before the cell phone. Had an off roader in the hills behind my house once splatter me on channel 11 calling on 9 ... few years ago.

I was waiting for my girlfriend in front of her house (she was getting off work) and around 2AM I heard about the weakest signal possible... the dude was stuck up on some mountain and I took the details down and called in the Count Sheriff. I never had any followup but I went back and told him the deputy was on his way.

Forty years ago . . .

Was hanging out at my friends house with a bunch of people (8-10) out in the street. People? I mean stupid young kids (16-22 years old) - like myself included.

A few of the kids got on a car and the driver suddenly accelerated and decelerated rapidly. He did this many times. Well, one of the guys finally slid off and hit his head on the hard asphalt. My neighbor buddy ('Craig') and I both ran over to him. Didn't look good; his eyes were rolling up in his head.

So Craig shouted at me 'Rob, let's get on your CB and see if we can get some help here fast'. So we both ran over to my old 64 Ford Falcon, I got on Ch 9, and punched the PTT: "Hey REACT; are you listening? Got an emergency here, please call it in - we need an ambulance - it is needed at _________".

So, the 'old guy' on the other end said "Now, calm down, son. What is your name and address and ph number?" So he got all of that down, and an ambulance made it in less than ten minutes.

Although it may have all been timely and helpful, that kid suffered permanent brain damage. He could walk and talk; but was s l o w. Don't even remember his name, as he was a new acquaintance. But at least, REACT did help in a timely fashion.

That is how I remember my first CB radio. A cheap GE 40 channel CB radio with just a volume and a squelch control, with a 1/4w steel whip on the bumper.
And REACT . . .
