CRE 8900

Sad to see they are out and potentially having problems, I wouldn't mind having one myself from what little I have read/seen with them...

The DB

In addition to the HF radios, the engineers are working on digital business band radios so that is delaying things also. Further, there is the pending petition for rule change before the FCC. They have lots of stuff in the works, just not coming on the market yet. Anyway, most of you are going to have to accept SMT as that is the way things are headed. Can't really go where Ranger wants to go without switching to all SMT. However, one HF product that I have seen will really blow out all competition.

I know they have some new stuff in the works but they need to get after it and bring them to market before they start to lose market share. 2950DX is due for an upgrade.

In my day job I work with Chinese factories and we hate sending designs over there, by next year we'll see our exact product being sold elsewhere and other companies will buy them and stamp their name on them. There's no use in trying to go after them because by that point it's usually already too late.

We can only blame ourselves for shutting down all the manufacturing in this country and shipping it overseas.

Don't know what the legal deal is the CRE 8900 but I do know I've gotten more comments on the SSB quality than any radio I've ever tested/owned. That's with the stock mike, everyone says it sounds like a desk mike. Glad I got a couple while the getting was good :)

They do have new radios. Problem is between the time I see them and the time they actually get on the market, someone else has copied them because some supplier wants a cheaper price. Someone has to pay for new engineering.

the trouble with subcontracting in the far east is just as many if not more slip out the factory back door as the front door, once you give them the design to make for you its kind of hard to stop them flogging counterfeits of it, as i'm sure many clothing, electronics, perfume manufacturers amongst many others have found to their cost.

design them in the west, build them in the west, using western employees and protected by western copyrighting laws and this shit would be much more difficult to counterfeit but much more expensive for the consumer.

the trouble is greedy western shareholders want to produce things with cheap labour and still sell at prices as if they used western labour and quality standards to maximise their profit

the basic business philosophy is "fuck the consumer, we're making a killing"

Regardless of the legal drama I heard this morning that more of these hit the U.S. and are in stock for dealers to order.

I continue to use the CRE 8900 in the mobile and I just get glowing reports on the air. I still find AM to be a bit tame but the SSB just kicks butt on this radio in my opinion.

Again I paid money for mine so I'm not trying to peddle the radio or anything I just have found it meets my radio usage needs better than most other radios I've used.

I'm very picky about my radios and i will say this; that little 8900 in my mobile continues to astound me! It just works great!! All i have are positive compliments on the audio on AM and SSB! The little mic is kinda wimpy feeling (not very manly looking or feeling in my fat paws!) IMHO but it sounds AWESOME for as small as it is..

Bells CB has them in stock! :) But he doesn't have real time to place an order online. His website is old as the hills and he really needs to update it. It reminds me of a webpage from 1996!

Do you think these will sound or work better than a well tuned 2510? I am thinking of getting one but started thinking about dropping $300 bucks for one. I already have a couple of 2510's and a 2600 that work fine and a htx100 so not sure. I like some of the features and some not so much. Roger beeps and junk like that does not interest me or the ham crowd, I only do 10 meters any more.

how would one work with a kL203 amp. it would still be nice to see some one come out with a quality SSB export that would be under $ 350.00 with a detachable face. one that you could use with those little A/C vent mounts or cup holder mounts. i have a Yaesu 7900 2 meter radio like that and always wish for a radio for 11 meter SSb radio the same way. i'd like to get one of these 8900 and mate it with a KL 203

Hey Dave,

I've actually tested the CRE 8900 with the KL203 and for SSB it matches up pretty well. Haven't run into any overheating issues. It is a little strong for it but I've found that on SSB the KL203 can handle most 25-35 export radios without a problem.

AM is not a very good match as you have to turn the output way down and since the CRE doesn't have very much AM swing you won't get the most out of the KL203.

SSB works great though.

Any news on the new HF product?

and also the rf power on outside of radio should be able to cut the power back a little

Several people have mentioned that they can hear 11 meter stations clearly on 10 meters using these CRE radios. Not like bleedover either. The 11 meter signal shows up on a single 10 meter frequency and changes with the CB channel being heard in the 10 meter band. That points to serious image, mixing or PLL issues being caused in the frequency generation. I'm not aware if it's been confirmed the problem exists on transmit too but if it does, that may be one reason this model has become hard to find in stock.
