Dave Made Choice

Howdy 131. If I'm correct you know Dave. Can you verify if this builder (Chris) is actually building these with the permission/help of Dave himself? I'm assuming it's easy to say anything without worrying about a trademark or pattin infringement lawsuit. Thanks

He got the ok to use Damemade.

I may be wrong, but, I don't think the original "DAVE" (of about 30+ years ago) has anything to do with the current product line. I recall that the company has been sold more than once since then.

The quality of the "original" DAVE MADE equipment and todays DAVE MADE equipment is no where near the same.

YMMV

I don't know about sold but you are correct. Joe in NC has been building amps labeled Davemade for a long time. These were sold on the davemade.mobi site and another one ran by cherry popper.

Chris will soon be building for the original Dave. It should be a good change. I think cherry poppers name was also Chris but may be mistaken. Either way it's not the same guy.

There is no money to be made with the amount of time it takes, and cost of good parts. Plus dealing with CB'ers. It's a combo ego/hobby thing. Both are losing money every hour they spends doing CB.

No kidding. People think in dollars and watts. 90% of people won't pay for quality and think anyone that does is stupid. God forbid they run an amp at a watt less than they can squeeze out if it.

Amen to both of you Mustang131 and 543_Dallas!!! Many just don't get it! That old saying "you get what you pay for" truly means just that when it comes to getting a quality amp. Not like the ones that know WTF they are doing just slap these things together!! And I ain't talking no BBI BS either!!!

I only know one guy that I would trust building me an amp these days and he never lets anyone know who he is!! Too much BS in the hobby for all that! Like I said, you get what you pay for, nothing more, nothing less!!! Bottom line!

I've learned much since returning to the airwaves. So much more information that's actually viable is available online. Especially right here on wwdx. The quality of the knowledge being passed on from so many members is incredible. I was one of those every watt count's chicken banders. I could see 1000 watts on my phantom while driving it with 18-20 watts on ssb but chose to drive it with about 12. I actually drive it with less then 12 watts. I see 500-600. Knowing that the difference between 1000 and 500 is negligible on the other end. With the price of the sweep tubes that are used in 95% of these amps being $50-80 it's absolutely not worth driving them to the sky. Even with my phantom and 300 a having been recapped with upgraded values the extra output gained by pushing it isn't worth the wear and tear. I try to pass this knowledge on to others on air but it seems like I'm wasting my time. I usually just listen and laugh at the every day QSO that Involves two or more stations telling another how to get another 15 watts out of an amplifier that has two transistors/pills in it and is showing 80 watts. This conversation is so common. Weather it trying to get another 100 out of an amp that's rated at 500 or a cb showing 12 and trying to get it to show 20. It's laughable. P.s. With the IMO fair prices for a new or used Ameritron or the like I don't see the draw of the old Palomar's D&a's and all the other like 30 to 50 year old amps. Besides nastagia their just not worth the up keep. I'm cleaning house and moving into the 21st century. 73

Honestly I wouldn't know the difference between an old school well built to a newly produced one that's a piece of junk. I don't have a mobile setup and never believed in running a mobile amplifier in a base situation. I know many do and am sure there's nothing wrong with it. It's just my preference. My op was purely based on my curiosity of the "Dave Made" amps being advertised as such. Back as a kid (1977) I heard the Dave Made name and the quality build they were known for. Being I was in Brooklyn NY and the DV's were made in NJ I'm assuming many who owned them simply took the ride over to the Jersey side in order to business with Dave himself. I don't know when the real Dave stopped making amps but if I'm correct he was still around building certain products within the last ten years or so. I say this because those who were lucky enough own those transceivers/transmitters he built have an idea when he stopped making anything himself. 73

I'm guessing he stopped around the time he moved the shop from Pitman.
The earliest dave box I can remember was the early 90's. It was a 4 pill in a 667 case. Saw a few "reworked" boxes before I ever saw gold.
I recall seeing Shockwave leaving the filiment voltage on his 3 3-500z box driver. Looked awsome in the back of the old Econoline around 1993.

I'm resending the year in which I recall hearing about a guy named Dave who built amplifiers labeled Dave Made. After thinking about it seriously it could've been between 1982 and 1985. It was on channel 15. It was Artie Windjammer in a QSO about Dave and the quality amplifiers he built. I'm fairly positive Dave was building amplifiers before the 90's. I'm still thinking i heard Dave's name associated with amplifiers in the 1970's. I know there's some on this fourm who were around back then or at least know the history of Dave Made and the time period associated with his history from day one to the final piece of equipment he himself built or was directly involved in. Thanks for the information. 73

Heard all the stories of his 3cx3000 in a 5.0 Mustang back in da day. Lived within range of his 20, but never heard him on the air till I moved to Cali.
I don't recall hearing about him till late 1980's. Maybe my memory is wrong. I recall Earl's Electronics in Bayville was selling them, but having a hard time keeping up with demand.
He's mostly legit now, amazing sluff.

I know 3 years late here, but circumstances took me away from thread. Dave started building for himself around 82, then DM got going around 86ish when he was on state street. We had 5-7 builders with the weekend guys like me and were cranking 24/7. Sonar, you may remember Tommy did daves car stereo system back in the day until Dave built his own class D amps . He dwindled builds down around late 90s to just friends and friends of friends. And Yes, altho 3 years late Chris has full blessing and support of Dave right now. I and a close friend are who intro Chris to Dave, he then went there weeks at at a time to go thru the DM graduate course as I and a few others did over the year. Shame this is late, but figured reinforce he facts from someone with first hand knowledge.
