Export radio choices..

So here we go. Most of these are very similar. Just slightly different IMO in wattage output and maybe a few extras.. Some even have almost identical boards. Plan on lots of SSB and some extra channels on 11m..

Choose the one you think would be best for a base setup.. and your experience with them..

This would be an option for me to run with my old Ranger 296DX..

I bought a at6666 a few months ago and it works great for me. I have tried it mobile and as a base. it worked great for either option for me. I have about 60 mobiles and bases and so far the AT6666 has turned out to be my favorite radio. a couple of my friends have the AT5555 radios due to being a smaller radio and they like it very well.

I have a 5555, a 955 and a Galaxy 99v as far as exports go. I have to say that for $200 the 5555 is a steal and it's functional layout is better than the 955 making it easier to use.

2950 would be nice if you have seeing problems. Otherwise buy that one, which you like the most.

I voted AT-6666 for two reasons.

#1 Not expensive

#2 I have one and I like it

Do yourself a huge favor and buy a ham rig if you plan on doing a lot of SSB. There is not an export made that can compete with the features of a decent ham rig.

This is the absolute truth! No export or otherwise can beat even a low end ham rig on SSB. Now AM is a different story, however a cb receiver will always have hash compared to a ham rig with DNR. Stations I can barely hear on my RCI 2995DXCF are always crystal clear on either my 7300, 891 or 7610 on AM or SSB. Hell once I turn on the ACOM or AL-1500 all bets are off. My average AM ham rig will walk the dog all over your yard.

I have an Alinco DXSR-8T HF rig. But the NB sucks and gets alot of qrm as compared to my CB rig (296DX).

Hence the quest for a mate to go with my current CB radio.

I like the idea of a dedicated rig for 10/11/12m for the A99.

The Alinco is on an endfed and works well for all the normal bands 80/40/20

I love mine too but does your channel encoder get finicky on yours? That's the only gripe that I have. I say the at-6666, great radio with great reports. Talked all over the USA on mine

There are many of those. I would say all except a few models.

Here’s an FT-891 in my truck. I set my first 40 memory channels up for 11 meters. My VFO A/B are set up for channel 19 and lower 36 USB so I can quick change between my favorites. While mobile the radio is locked so I can’t accidentally change frequencies. About 50 watts on AM and 100 on SSB. Get great audio reports. The NB and DNR remove virtually all noise. I do get a tad whine when accelerating which I could eliminate with more bonding.

Personally I think it is. A lot of people complain that when turned off it loses some settings...however if you save the frequency to memory you don’t lose anything. The other major complaint is changing modes LSB...USB...FM...AM there is not a button that enables you to quickly change. You have to go into the menu. This radio is heavily driven by menu’s...something you won’t be doing while driving. I believe you can adjust the AM power down to 1 watt so you could drive an amplifier at that level...I would need to check the swing to be sure.

A Galaxy 98VHP use to be mounted in it’s place..I was wanting a smaller radio with nice big display and the FT-891 fit the bill. Typically everyone raves about the NB and DNR of this radio

I think right now HRO is listing them at $599...I got a new in the box one off QTH from a trucker for $400...yes heck of a deal.
