Freebanding for Beginners

I see the term freebanding used all the time but don't know a thing about it.
What exactly is it?
What equipment is needed?
Is there much activity to be found there?

Thanks!
It's good stuff, I enjoy the conversations found on these frequencies.

Well Jeff, looks like we finally made it! Nice qso again, heard you through the back of the beam while pointing to Alaska.
A few of them from up north have been creeping down onto the coast in the last 2 wks now.

Always look forward to talking to you Larry, and you sounded great in my RX.
Very nice to see the band open and everyone enjoying radio.
Brings back memories of old times with the West Coast Tag Team.
All the best!

Germany and several more in France this morning Ralph. Keep your ear to the ground this afternoon if you aren’t busy...I like seeing your spots on the board ;)

Not had chance to do much radio today Dan. Been busy here with other things...boring things. I did see Earlier that you were getting it done!
