The MFJ senses a carrier and tunes full auto or do you set the radio to do this? Sorry to sound stupid. The MFJ manual is vague.

I'm not using that configuration at the moment. I'm using an MFJ-993B. It has two power and tuning ranges. On 150 watt scale, it tunes 64:1. On 300, it's 32:1. I'm testing it out.

So it acts like a LDG Z11ProII and has the automatic with keyup. I have about 60 memories I use currently for my nets and active frequencies. This would work well then once saved in and locked and tuned.
This 891 sounds like it would make a good base setup for me and fit in my tiny shelf.
It works the same. I don't like how Yaesu interfaces with MFJ and LDG tuners. I put my tuners out of reach and don't like having to putshthe tuners button. On my Kenwood and ICOM's, I use the cable. The main advantage of MFJ tuners are in their tuning speeds. They tune unknown impedances much faster. The wider range is nice, but not needed by everyone. Several MFJ tuners have built in meters. LDG had a meter for the 600 watt and up units. I don't know why they stopped making them. IDK why, but I have RFI issues with LDG tuners. Many times, I'll get a targeted match, then while transmitting, the tuner will keep going into tune mode. I've never had this issue with any of the MFJ units.
Some people turn their head at MFJ. I've had decent luck with their various products. Not once did they ever not make it right. I always pull the top and carefully inspect for QC issues.

There are 3 (!) different tuning modes on the LDG
Manual, "semi" manual, and full auto.

Thinking of making a/b/c functions as Tune/IF Shift/DSP as I don't see me using the scope.

Tune button won't do anything unless you have an ATAS, I do believe. If you use an interface cable, I believe you must push tune button on the tuner itself. Use the mic method to throw a 10 watt carrier.
