Galaxy radio drift

because even Silver Solder is inherently brittle and can tear traces from the board.

Seems that Pb had one set of issues (Toxicity) and now Silver with it's own set (Brittle and Melting point)- well, the days of radio may be numbered because they are so disposable nowadays...

The solder with the highest tensile strength there is, is a silver solder. SN62 / PB36 / AG02. Best solder there is for rework. Super tensile strength and low melting point which is easy on those cheap CB radio circuit boards.
 
Just about everything has become disposable. CB radios, unlike amateur radios, don't cost an arm and a leg so people are more apt to just say, the heck with it, and buy another one.

Says the guy that wants to sell an expensive potted mod instead of buying a $15 heater for the part at fault: The crystal itself.

If we want to talk about mechanical stresses what do you think that lug of epoxy is going to do to it bouncing around?

Get real. It's a cheap radio with cheap parts. spending money to construct a potted block with three variable inductors and around 15 passives is completely insane.
 
So I'll sit back and contemplate some more - keep up the good work.

I only hope someday these cheapskates at the Big 3 start reviewing their work to keep landfills from filling up with useless parts and scrap.

He doesn't realize that he can't do what he wants to without a crystal swap like Lesters kit uses. Way above his "self taught radio engineer" skills. He's still trying to get the forum to design his products for him. :)

The two things that no one else caught was the interaction between C130 and D49. That was causing a major drift problem. The other thing that no one caught was that Ranger on the 2950 put the 5p cap across the crystal terminals to lend some stability to the Circuit. Both of which are major.
