has anyone had a radio built by lesters customs?

Lesson learned 918, the 959 is not one of my fav radios either. They just drift too much for me. If you need a powerful radio, maybe a 2970 would be a better option. But IMO, a radio and external amp of that size should be separated. While not having any bells and whistles, the optima is an SSB talking radio. I can't find a flaw in mine anyway.

LOL here it is

Hey wheelman, what does it do on a.m.? His vid showed a 100 watt dk, swinging to 400 or so.
Does the variable power control just the radio, or is it variable for the amp too?
As others have said, I would also upgrade your power wire to at least no.4 on that long of a run.

A Galaxy 959 is not a good radio to do these kind of mods to. Poor quality control, drifty SSB and poor receive (white noise).... this kind of stuff makes me glad I run the old CB equipment. But then again, I'm real old school with my thinking, just do a good alignment, put in a few channels (no channel boards, etc), unlock the clarifier, and call it a day. If I need extra power, I just get an external amp. I couldn't ever justify spending $500 for something like this 959 when I can get a good 1980's AM/SSB mobile PLUS an amp for half the money.

W9CLL is right on the money with his suggestion for an Optima MkIII. 40-50W of SSB power, drift free on SSB, good noise blanker circuit, compact size.

Sorry that ya feel you got ripped off, but hopefully you'll see that the new stuff isn't always better!

~Cheers~
i agree with you 110% im putting in no 6 power wires right now and one last try before it goes back in the box

the variable works for radio and amp both

oh and on am id get about 150 im wondering if its really an sx 175 ive had dx 500 a couple 667s dx 400s dx 350 hdv ive wired many amps the radio is just too turdesque
and the lescomm board sucks it drifts its like just some blingy shit like curb feelers on a car lol im serious just garbage

The Lescomm board itself isn't the reason why the radio drifts... it drifts due to the crystal oscillator and the clarifier circuits... they are poorly designed/cheaply built with low quality components from Galaxy. Robb and I have done some extensive modifications and testing on this, and have concluded that the 949/959 radios are just plain awful for drift. We were able to get a little bit of the drift out, but nothing near where it should be. I can't speak for the rest of the stuff that Les did, but his channel boards are top notch.

~Cheers~
