imax 2000

630, you are right...pictures often make the difference, but this is not a close up...I don't think I can even see the Imax.

Marconi I really had to squint to see it but I believe it's bolted to the tower leg. We had a local (newbie) that did the same thing with an A99.. he couldn't understand why his swr was high. A couple of us looked at it and suggested he take down his old tv antenna and put it in its place. He took our advice and it made a world of difference.

I'm not surprised 630, your post was reasonable and good advice.

The reason I asked for a close up was...I've seen a troubleshooting idea posted somewhere that warned not to mount the A99/I2K with the mast protruding out above the very top of the mounting bracket. Otherwise, this might allowed a small portion of the support mast to sit right beside the tuning nuts,

and that was reported to be no-way-no.

Maybe a 3'> standoff might help, if the antenna can't go on the top of his tower.

From the pic I looks like the imax is bolted directly to the tower with a few feet of it running along side the tower leg. That's not going to work. The radiation from the antenna is reflecting off the tower. Take down the scanner antenna and put it at the top of the tower. Get it up free and clear of the tower. Bring the rings tunning rings together in the center of the tunning thread area... then check your swr and report the results..
Going to take it down friday bolts holding pipe are seized up have to use sawzaw and cut pipe but going to be fun doing that with the way the top of the sways a little and trying to cut it and hold on.I was talking to the guy at solarcon he said the way there preset is with 100ft coax and 4 turns up from bottom of threads turning both so i'll try that also

Wear some heavy gloves to protect your hands if you have to handle the antenna and it is old. Don't try and adjust the antenna until you get it down.

Consider to take some suitable rope up with you and at a good point up high, tie the ropes off and let others on the ground carefully secure them to a suitable support somewhere, to a tree, fence, telephone pole, etc. I use lightweight 3/8 poly for my guy lines and it is very strong. If possible, you might even need to go over the house with at least one line.

That should give you some extra temporary support from the swaying if the guys are properly or even close as distributed around the tower using at least 3 and better 4 lines.

Just be careful.

Anytime I read about someone climbing a tower then trying to "perform a task while holding on" it kinda makes me cringe. Talk to some of your friends and try to track down a climbing belt or even better a full climbing harness. If you can't find one use a piece of strong rope...as long as your confident with your knot tying abilities. This will be MUCH SAFER. Trust me, it's so nice to be able to hook to or rap around the tower and lean back. You can used both hands. As Marconi pointed out temporarily rope (guy) the legs for stability if it makes you feel better. To many guys have ended up dead or in a wheelchair trying to do the "hold on with one hand" method. Just a suggestion...I would hate to see you become a statistic by simply pursuing your hobby...

Amen to that 630!! Very well said for sure. Always 100% tie off when doing any kind of tower work!! A climbing belt or harness is definitely a tool when working around towers!! And if you don't possess good knot skills don't do it! Not worth your life! Like said, having to hang on and try to saw something or work on something without being tied off is just asking for trouble!!! Truly it is!!

I see there is no way to hold on with one hand and have a sawzaw in the other i was up to the top going to soak the 2 bolts with PB blaster and try my 1/2 bar but got to find some type of harness or something like that not sure even where to look have to do a search i'm sure they have different ones wasn't to bad up there when there is no wind.Next week its going to be up close to the 80s maybe let them bolts soak some.If any of you guys know where i can get a harness of some type let me know going to search some now

GME Supply Company, Industrial Safety Products, Harness Land.com,
Just google Tower climbing harness and you'll get quite a few different companies. When I had to perform tower rescue for any of my tower climbers I used an ExoFit Tower Climbing Harness. One of the suppliers above has them. But any of the suppliers plus many more make some good climbing harnesses.
Hope this helps. You'll also need a helmet, and other items as well to complete the package. You only get one chance at the top of a tower. Take advantage of all the tools to do the job safely!! I'll go back to the motto 100% tie off always!!! Safety is detrimental to your well being!!! I'm not trying to preach about this, but have heard about way too many deaths from climbing towers. Like I said, you only get one chance being up a tower!! Why not do it safely as possible? JMHO's. And again hope this helps. Have a good one and please be safe man!!

How much is your life worth I suppose you could bare that question. Look around you may find one cheaper. But yes the good belts aren't cheap. TBA02 my climbing "helmet" is made by Petzel, and is called the Vertex Vent. Here is a pic of it as well as my climbing belt and accessories. 2995, you won't need all the stuff I have on my Harness, but some of it you'll need for sure. Gloves, helmet, carabiners, tie off ropes, and such will be needed. Like I said, how much is your life worth is the question you have to ask yourself. I wouldn't dare go up a tower without being 100% tied off, no questions asked!! It's just not worth it. But that is just my opinion about the matter. I regard my life and safety very highly. That is what you need to think about, not so much the monetary value of the items. If you plan on going up and down the tower then spend the money and do it safely. Just my thoughts. I didn't pay for the Harness I have so yes it does make it a bit easier to say that. But then again I would not climb a tower without it!!! Bottom line. Not trying to be harsh here, but as I've said, you only get one chance unless you are very very lucky, when dealing with heights and being up a tower working on something. I don't trust luck. I do trust my equipment though. Just my 2 cents on the subject.
