MIKE OF MIKE'S RADIO REPAIR

Status
Not open for further replies.
I will say this much. I live less than an hour from Mike and have met with him a number of times. He is a great guy, very knowledgeable as we all know and is VERY dedicated to his family and their needs as well. About a year ago we were talking about how busy he is and he shared how excited he was that I was working on radios myself. I asked him if I could email him a question occasionally and he said it was ok but to beware, he was receiving between 100 and 200 emails a day. I too have reached out to him without a response but I have seen a few folks on the interweb stating that he has fixed their radios recently so I would expect that all is ok. The last time we were together he told me that someone had sent him a box of radios (I think it was 6) for repair and he had a tone of work backed up. When folks send you work without a schedule for that work it can be crazy at times. Also, I think that the YouTube videos really blew up his business with work. He may simply be avoiding posting anything so he can control the volume that comes through the door.

Somethings going on. He did a recap of a 2000 for me. Had it for the normal amount of time. Invoiced me. I paid and got the radio back... with a non working clock/freq counter. I emailed him. Nada. Silence.

I can't say Mike and I were best pals but we were on good terms. He's worked on a few of my other radios. I let him use my.other 2000 to video for his YouTube diode expose. It's not like him to do poor quality work THEN not deal with it or even respond.
I've.been thinking the worst myself.

Tell me about the clock/freq counter. Is the issue that the display is off or is the display on and not displaying correctly?

Simple things can go wrong when a radio is shipped back to the owner. Did you check to see that the four plugs on the clock/counter module are seated squarely to the pins?

Just remember that this should be done ONLY with the AC power cord pulled out of the wall socket. It's possible to damage the clock/counter module pulling one of those sockets loose while the AC cord is plugged in. The clock/counter is always powered up.

But now you got me curious, too. What sort of malfunction did the counter have?

I hope not. Going back to the scanner repair reply, it mentioned him getting them repaired as of a week or so ago. We all know how quick fucked up things can happen but I'm hoping that's not the case. Getting something wrong like a 2000's clock/frequency counter for him is definitely out of character. I'm going to try a few times (during the afternoon) to reach him by calling. If by some small chance he answers I will definitely bring up the issue you're having with your frequency counter and the clock. 73

Even though I didn't mention it in my reply, I was thinking exactly the same. Maybe it was damaged in shipping. You're a good man nomad. You're definitely like so many others here, an asset to the group. Good looking out brother. I'll keep checking out this thread as I am interested finding out if you, and possibly others help our other brother get his 2000 straightened out. 73

Mike knows that counter module at least as well as I do, maybe better. He did teach me one trick I had missed. Adding a diode to get a six-digit clock. The seconds are being counted inside the clock. He showed how to make the display show them.

Yeah, not a big deal. But I was impressed.

No way he would send it out unless it was right at the time.

As for me.... I figure it this way.... he owes me nothing! Nada!

I have learned SO MUCH from the videos that he HAS posted to this point. Earlier on ... I had questions and as I watched more and more of his material... i found my answers. Then ....just watching his "work flow"... gave me patterns to follow.

I have gained through watching his vids to this point...... and I thank him!

The clock/counter thing happened a few months ago. It didn't tick me off. As you guys said things happen in transit, even with Mike's quality shipping methods! It was the way it happened that caused me to wonder. It just wasn't like him.

My eyesight sucks. Diabetic nerve damage. However it doesn't suck so badly that I couldn't check the insides of the 2000 for loose wires and plugs. Nada. Plus the box it shipped in was perfect. No dents at all. Couple emails sent and ignored and I got concerned.

The radio's not why I am posting now.

Amen on the shipping!!! it's possible no matter how well you pack something if there is an issue that can rear its ugly head shipping will expose it! I receive and send back to customers at about 40 to 50 units a month and that rate of work only took about 3 months since I started taking mail-ins and I average about 2 out of every 40 or so that generate some kind of little nitpicking issue.

It's just black. At all times. Rest of the radio works great. Typical Mike quality work.
This sounds like a total loss of supply voltage to the counter most likely. Even a good capacitor can go bad but if all caps were replaced as I know Mike often does? there still could be a bad one. since there are 2 supply voltages that are dedicated primarily to the counter it could also be a bad connection or a bad regulator that supplies the regulated source to the Counter. I will take a look at the schematics later if I have time as I have a 2000 that was just sent to me several days ago but I do have about 18 units in front of it so it may not happen.

When you have a moment please PM me your contact info. I don't mind spreading the work around. Especially to other brother wwdx members. It's also to my advantage knowing as many trusted Tech's as I can.
The reason for this thread is an excellent reason for having more than one tech. As of this moment I wouldn't ship a piece of equipment to Mike. Not until someone confirms that everything with him is 100% okay, and he is operational. I did think about sending him my two Autek wm1's, for calibration but I'm gonna need them soon, and don't want to have to be waiting, and wondering when or if I'm ever gonna get them back. After a few weeks I'll begin loosing sleep, and I've enough life issues. I don't need to be loosing sleep over equipment floating in limbo. Thanks. 73 PS. I consider myself an excellent customer. I only exspect work that was discussed, and am not a knit picker. I'm sure you know the type. 73

So, we don't know what happened to our friend?
I dropped about a half dozen calls to Mike using the 2 separate phone numbers, and nothing.
Straight to VM. I also sent as many emails and zip, nada, zilch on any replies. I sure hope he's okay. I'm so tempted to send him one of my wm1's for calibration.
But would certainly hate to loose it. Or have to wait months in order to find out if he's alright. It might sound petie to discontinue my patronage (after all it's only a $1.) But if he's out of business or has no intention of ever making YouTube clips again why be a patron of a non existing YouTube channel?
