Mobile Antenna ??

Wilson 2000 or 5000, don't scrimp on the antenna, the antenna system is the most important link in the chain.

Sirio all the way. K40 around 60 bucks sirio around 100 bucks with cable antenna combined. 40 extra dollars is money well spent IMO.

+10 on the sirio 4000 or 5000!! Way better antenna than a k30 or k40!! Been there and done that. The k40 I had wouldn't tune worth a crap and the connector was a POS as well. I am totally with the others here. Spend the extra money and get a good antenna. If you want a mag mount, get the sirio performer 5000 with the PL145 mag mount, H&Y has them as a combo for around 100 shipped. Great combo for dx'ing IMO.

No way would I even consider drilling a hole in the roof. I was looking for opinion of a K40 or similar magnetic mount, that's all.

The SIRIO ANTENNAS are available
with magmounts.
222DBFL and I both run the 5000 performer antennas with magmount.
Don't go cheap on your antenna. More important than hanging good radio in your vehicle. With a bad antenna you won't get out and no body will hear that great sounding radio.
I had a K40 with my magnum omega force and I did not have the range I should have had. Changed to the Sirio and I was hitting an island in the Atlantic Ocean close to Spain so strong the guy I was talking to thought I was a local.

Why wouldn't you drill a hole in the roof of a Tahoe? A magmount will damage the paint a whole lot more, especially the coax that flaps about. You also have the issue of the coax getting crushed as well and the paint discolouring where the magmount sits.

Drill a hole, fit the antenna. When you sell the Tahoe fill the hole with a cheap GPS antenna.

A different take:

I've got two Radio Shack magnetic mount antennas from long ago. The first was purchased around 1976. The second was purchased around 1979. They are twins of one another except that the 1979 one is charcoal while the 1976 is a lighter gray. They have their coils at the base. The whips are about 32".

Both antennas continue to work extremely well. I've tuned both to channel
19. My SWRs are flat there and go no higher than 1.3 at either end of the CB band. I regularly talk 15 to 20 miles locally. When the skip is rolling in, these do just fine.

I occasionally see these antennas on Ebay for cheap. They are a steal. I've not picked up a 3rd only because I don't need one. You may want to keep an eye out for one of them. I steered a friend in this direction. He snagged one on Ebay for $10.00. He's pretty happy with it and he saved himself a few $.

Good luck.

People think drilling a hole will decrease the value of the vehicle when and if they trade it in. I never put any stock in that myself because when you trade in your car/truck they are gonna give you what they want hole or not. I've always hard mounted my antennas they just look better to me. Take em off and cap em when not used. I tried mag mounts years ago and they work fine but they tend to get foreign matter between the magnet and the metal of the car causing scratches. just my own preference to hard mount because it looks better to me and no cosmetic damage other than the hole itself which is usually only the size of a quarter instead of the size of a large doughnut of scratches. JMHO
