Hello all. I am in the market for a radio in the $200-$250 range but most importantly I need a radio that will fit into a small cubby(cobra 29 chassis). I have a galaxy 48T but it is just too big for the compartment I have. Ive been kicking the idea around about getting the Mirage MX36HP but dont know alot about em. I also been looking at the cobra 29's w/ rfx 75 kit from Doug at custom cbs. Im looking for something with good audio to get that loud and proud sound in a small package. am band no ssb is needed. I am open to suggestions.

Thanks JJ

Any insight on the Mirage 36HP would be greatly appreciated as well

Yeah Im gonna go with doug. Just undecided about which radio. He says the 36hp is a good talker. Also says the Cobras are good too. I just dont want to throw money at the wrong radio lol

He can build a monster Galaxy 919 as well. Just make sure your "cubby hole" has enough air flow, don't want to burn your radio up.

A nicely tuned 29 and a small amp is the way to go

I agree, there's a lot of Magnums, Galaxys, Superstars, etc around here but the 29s done right are still king of the audio hill.

Loudest with a class C amp, especially if you drive it with only about 1.5w carrier.
The best sounding mic on one around here is the Astatic 575-M6, IF you can find one, they are out of production. {Cry_river}

I would go with the Galaxy just because everyone out there has a Cobra. But there's a reason everyone has a Cobra. The Ranger and Connex have nice sound, too.

I still say cobra, They at cheap for starters mods are cheap and plentiful they get more watts on freq and when done right
They will have that killer audio that not all blown out sounding like an export will.

you guys recommending the cobras, are you talking one with the rfx 75 mod? or just a cobra 29 peaked and tuned? The cobras with the rfx 75 kit fully modded are about the same price as the mirage. I was just a lil skeptical about buying a cobra 29 that has been completely re-worked. Anyone have any experience with dougs cobras? What are some other good/reputable places. Im in MI. I used to use Al at sparkys but since he closed I havent used anyone else. I hear lots of good thing about Doug from custom cb. I really wish I could just put my galaxy 48t in there because that thing blows smoke. Just wont fit into my new truck :confused1:

RFX 75's are junk period. If you want a good setup a good clean cobra radio with a decent tune and an external amp and you'll be rockin. People think those RFX 's are the best thing ever. Everyone I've known to have one has pulled them off and went back stock because they took a crap.

And as far as mosfets go who wants the extra heat in their radio? For what 30 watts ?????? You think someone will notice 8 watts versus a 30 watt MOSFET ????? I doubt it

The more and more I am researching into this, im thinking the RFX kit is not the way to go. I have been reading that they get HOT to where you cant touch em. in my small cubby that wont be good. I used to have an old phillipines made cobra that used to sound awesome. Im still undecided, Im actually thinking bout goin with the Mirage 36hp but would like to hear some feedback on one first. The 929, 939 galaxys might be an option too

Thanks for all the replies thus far

JungleJim, Read this thread will ya? http://www.worldwidedx.com/cb-band-cb-radios/148835-cobra-29-competition-radio-2.html I would talk to Doug again and see what he has to say about what you want and the space limitations, he may have something we have not even thought of " modded 979 perhaps" Take advice where you want but, as you can see and IMHO Ratfink likes to regurgitate what he has HEARD not what he knows for a FACT. If you read the other thread you would know what I mean....I have had Dougs comp 29 on a scope and a few meters and when he does them they are correct and not cut up as some would again like to regurgitate, and yes a RFX-75 WILL actually produce more than 75 watts:confused1:....especially on a Cobra 29. Wow I actually feel better now....off my box.

Ok thanks IDIeselman. I will check it out! I have been having a hard time trying to reach Doug. I have emailed and called him both, Im sure hes been busy with the holidays. I will try again on Monday am
