need help choosing radio?? Mirage 36hp? cobra?

I think I would make a list of radios that would fit buy the spec sheets. and narrow it down from there because size does mater (lol) in your application. I have the RFX 75 on the back of my radio and yes it will get hot and should be fan cooled. But I love it, however it is stock on my omegaforce S45HP. if not set up right on any radio you will have problems. you need to narrow down by the size of the radios and how many chanels ssb or not. I run a mobil cobra 29 lx for me stock they work great with a tune even better or a mic change I like the road king for noise canceling. and most of the time I olny talk a few miles. When I get closer to home a small 100 watt box does the job.

RFX 75's are junk period. If you want a good setup a good clean cobra radio with a decent tune and an external amp and you'll be rockin. People think those RFX 's are the best thing ever. Everyone I've known to have one has pulled them off and went back stock because they took a crap.

If you check out Doug's site you will see he has done hundreds of the RFX units, he has had TWO FAILURES. I bet the do it yur self fail rate is much much higher. Probably why they pulled em off.

For me I have no need for a Cobra 25/29 with an RFX installed. For those that do it's an option, just like single and dual mosfet mods. Not everyone can run an external amplifier.

There is a forum member that bought a Cobra 29 with an RFX installed and had it tuned to match a Texas Star 500V. That was one rocking set-up that Doug did.

Best time to reach him is 8:45-9:15 a.m. or send him an email with your # He will return your call.

Est or cst time zone?

Ive narrowed it down to 3 lol. Mirage mx36hp, cobra 29, galaxy 929. I just want the best bang for the buck and want to run the radio from power studs in truck, I dont want to have to run power to battery. Pretty much want the best talking radio I can get to fit into my cubby and use factory power hookups :headbang

EST. Tough choice on the radios. Good luck, if you are anything like me, a week after you buy one you will wish you would have bought something different:headbang

LOL yep thats me too. Thats why im wanting to get some input, I usually just pull the trigger and end up regretting it. Ive bought so many dam radios and sold em cause I wasnt happy with em. It wasnt so much the radios it was the tunes on em.

I hear Doug is pretty good. I have also heard good things about DTB radios as well.

Be patient with Doug as he has been buried with work but he will eventually get back to you.

IMHO Doug is the best. He takes the time to make sure he does the best he can do on every radio he works on. I too have heard nothing but good about DTB although I have no personal experience with them. I do miss the days of Calling Doug and having him answer first try and having anything I wanted built and at my door the next week.

So far I am really happy with my Magnun S45HP with the rfx-75 stock. Even if it is a junky horrible sounding export that could never match the sound of a properly tuned cobra. I have a cobra 29 I just had an rfx-75 installed on as well. I haven't tried it yet. Still waiting to get it back.

Good luck. you may be one of the few. most screwdriver wizzards claim 100+ watts and thats the start of all RFX problems. if you still have the paperwork on the S45HP look up the specks of dead key and out-put of the radio and you will see why they sound bad and dont last on the cobras. The RFX150 is almost out if you needed it mounted to the radio, this looks to be a big improvement. if it's not to late you should wait.

Doug must be closed for holidays, I tried calling it goes right to voice mail. I sent another email with no responses yet. I read that hes been real busy, Ive seen where some people have been waiting for over 6 months for there stuff. Is there anyone else that is good that isnt so backed up? I dont mind waiting a week or so but a few months....nah!

I also got it narrowed down to the Mirage or Galaxy 929, the Mirage has a slight edge lol

I would have to agree with both cobra n galaxy, but the newer galaxy 919's already have the regs in them n after a good peak sound very good over all n already have the variable. Deadly in the radio factory
