New president lincoln 2

It's nice to see vendors telling it like it is. Most retailers would blow smoke up your ass in order to make a sell. I'm glad I didn't spring for one of these turds.

After using the radio pretty heavily for a few weeks now my final review is similar to other reports....

I really like the radio in so many ways. It's really easy to use, has good output and everyone says it sounds great on the air. I'm using it daily and I'm able to hear stations and make contacts left and right.....but the receive just isn't as good as it could be.

I was comparing it last night to that old SBE Land Command LCBS-8 I picked up and it's funny because the Lincoln II obviously has a better receiver and picked up the far off stations better and registered a stronger signal, but they were easier to hear on the LCBS-8. Even though the LCBS-8 receiver wasn't picking them up as well the overall quiet characteristics of the receive just made it easier to hear them and listen to.

Now, while the reviews haven't been glowing, I will say that after weeks of use...it is completely usable. I've made a ton of contacts with it and I've been able to understand what the stations were saying no problem. I could kind of see some of the overload issues mentioned, but what I encountered was barely noticeable compared to some of the videos I saw.

In the end it's a bittersweet feeling. I really like the radio in so many ways, and after my CRE 8900 just failed last week (another story to be told), I was using the Lincoln II pretty heavily and enjoying it. It's just not the best radio to listen to, which is unfortunately one of the important parts of the radio's job.

I wouldn't put it into the Cobra 200 GTL type grouping just yet for issues, as I've heard President is already working to get the next run sorted out. My hope is that some bad press in the early days of the radios doesn't mean poor sales later on after they get the kinks worked out. It would be sad if this turns out to be a awesome radio after the tweaks but people got scared off by the initial reviews.

I hope they are able to get the fix done quickly and get some of the revised models out that can prove a significant improvement. It's a good radio but at the price the receiver needs to be better. If they can make some fixes then it could be an attractive radio even at the higher cost.

I will say much like the other Dave, the more you use it the less you notice the receive. You kind of get used to it since it still does work, just average compared to most.

* I also encountered the memory tuning quirk. If you program in a memory it works but when you go to the memory you can tune up or down, but if you leave memory mode and come back the frequency is where you left it (not the original saved memory). While this can be a little annoying, in some ways I actually liked it because I mostly use the memory functions to quickly jump to other frequency ranges. If you don't want to mess up your memory frequencies just don't touch the VFO in memory mode.

How did your CRE-8900 fail? I listen mostly on mine but talk on it occasionally.

Well at least they are trying to fix the issues, don't like that they again have used the customer as beta testers it seems. Anyhow thanks and keep us posted. I really wouldn't mind to have one if the issues weren't present. Do my even know if we can get them stateside yet? Thanks for all the Info. God bless.

I haven't performed the fixes yet as I need to pick up some of the smt resistors in the right values. I also started a new job this week so time is limited.

I should be able to do the mods next week probably and I will report on the before and after.

Dave if you need the mod info please email me - cbradiomagazine@yahoo.com.

I got a reply from WalcottCB about the pic of the Lincoln 2's they have on their website. Here's their reply,"We plan on carrying them, but are still working out the logistics and costs of having them imported into the US. I don't have any pricing or availability information at this time. As soon as we get any more details we'll update our homepage and get the product added to our site."
