Ok, lots of people are pushing the optima. Can you scan the cb frequencies with the scan function, then tune to 27.555? From what I have seen, if you want to scan cb, it has to be jumpered for cb, and can't go outside those frequencies. Is this correct?
just use your vfo and turn to your "ch", frequ. you dont need a "CH" this or that it's in free band mode. you dial to where you want to be , and you can pre-set your 5 fav. frqus.

With this rig, you can go ANY PLACE 10,11,12 meter. (11 meter=cb). you can be on "ch 38 LSB (27.3850) memory #1, and using the dial on VFO dial up to.....say 27.405 (40), then say you want to go to 27.555, just dial up to it or better yet put 27.555 in one of your memory's. with the Optima mklll the memory will remember if it's AM, FM, LSB,USB. no problem. On the RCI 2970N4, you have "CB channels, and if you like you have VFO mode I have both of these rig's and love them each for different reasons, the RCI 2970N4 was in my pick up truck, but my base needed work so the RCI 2970N4 came in the house, and is driving my 16 pill, and if need be, my 64 pill is on stand by;). the Optima mklll was then moved in to the truck once more, love them bouth....

It's not NO, you can do as you want, you just need to learn how to use the rig. it's very easy.
That is why I am asking. I have read reviews and watched videos, and no one has demonstrated that it has this capability. Let me reword it, as you may be confusing scan with tune. Can it be set to scan only 26.965 to 27.405, and still be able to tune to 27.415?

Ok, how do you make it do this? Do you set end points?

Edit: I double checked the manual, and it makes no mention of being able to set scan points in vfo mode.
where the jumper would go to make usa az cb you have them or you put a swich, you flip it from cb so you go to freeband mode hit scan button and go, it takes for ever, scan is SLOW. now EZ way #2 in free band mode pre set #1 to 27.695. with rig on pre set #1. hit scan button, and rig will scan, it's SLOW. key mic to stop when you want to stop, talk what ever. i scan most of the time by starting at my lowest pre set im scanning from and use the mic buttons to scan, it's MUCH faster, and you have better control. as a rule I run 27.385 lsb (pre set), 27.505 usb (pre set), 27.555 usb (pre set), and 28.405 usb (per set) , and last, 25.855 usb (pre set). and yes i do run 3 antenna's in the mobile, and run ts500, now but also run sweet 16 in the truck too, and I have 3, 350 amp alts. and I like to DX...;) p.s when you call dave at yeticomnz just tell him what you want.....thats all. 73's

Ok, so out of the box, it doesn't have the capability. Is it guaranteed safe to switch the mode with the radio on, or while transmitting, and will it remember the frequency when you switch back and forth? The manual says it should take 8 seconds to scan the cb channels. I don't recall the rci or stryker being that much faster. I really don't see why I would buy a super duper radio that is highly refined and packed with features, that I have to modify just to get a common feature that many other radios already have. It kinda makes it not so super duper in my book.

meany will tell you, and I will too, with out spending over $5000. you will not find a better SSB rig. There are little trixs with every tool to make work easier, you can't bet the filters on the Optima mklll, if you want great talk quality, spot on tx, rx, and no fuss the Optima mklll is your rig. one step down is the RCI 2970N4, and the "N4" is 400+ watts out put from the box.

I really don't know what to say. I'm still probably not going to buy an optima. Even if that means I sound horrible on the air, and I'm not part of the club. I guess I don't understand why someone would settle for an optima when there are better radios available. Some people spend 1000's of dollars on amps and alternators, cables, fuses, bonding, analyzers, coax, the list is almost endless. Then cheap out on some $300 export transceiver? I know I will never have the biggest and best sounding station, and I am OK with that.

Optima mk3 is the best SSB export radio I have used as well. Don't really care about scan functions and such, I did like MD mobile does and program the freqs I spend most my time on and be done. They are a rock solid ssb radio that can't be beat for the money. Great receive as well as TX audio with the right mic. JMHO. And if the N4 takes a shit, unless you have the amp board wired to a switch and can run barefoot, if amp takes a poop your done!! With the optima you can still keep on trucking at 50 watts on SSB!!

I liked my optima mk3 with my magnaforce 350hd! It absolutely rocked for a 2 pill mobile. Always got great reports and made many, mant contacts. It's actually how I came to get the optima mk3. I was using a magnum 257hp in the mobile until I heard camaro1 talking on an optima mk3 with the Icom HM36 made in Japan, and yes it's a real made in Japan one LOL!! At any rate I didn't look back and the only other radios I will now use are HF radios or my Uniden 980. I run an Icom 746 and kenwood ts140s for a base. But I wouldn't hesitate to pull out the optima mk3 and use it if needed!! It's a workhorse of a radio and has been for me for a couple years now.

sometimes it's not the cost, it's what you get for you $. yes the Optima is a low cost rig, it's not cheep. And as for my RCI 2970N4, it was not, and is not cheep ether, I spend what I can as I can, sometimes it's a little, sometimes it's a lot, I have on my shelf right now about 40+ years of some of the best, and some of the worst in CB rigs. I have Heath Kit rigs I have built myself in the 1970's, and one's I have rebuild this year, amps, antenna, you name it....radio has been my hobby well over 45 years, my Dad got me in to years back. I hope you find YOUR rig, they make more then one radio some we can have a choise. I hope you find the right one for for you, and you will as a rig is out there for everyone. And your right all the alternators is a bitch....but its better then the15kw gen set I was running in my comp rig.73's
