Like so many of these newer radios, most have switched to Electret condenser mics. I believe the Lincoln 2 is no exception. That means you’re dealing with an audio amplifier circuit that’s designed for the 1000 ohm impedance of that mic, instead of the typical 500 ohm impedance of the old school dynamic element. That mismatch is the reason for the lower output. You can compensate for that mismatch by using a power mic, but that’s not my personal choice. I prefer to stay with original mic or possibly modify it with a better Electret cartridge. Other modified options may include a computer desktop mic or various headsets that also use these cartridges without the need for extra amplification.. Don’t forget high end studio mics also adapt quite nicely if you’re into that sort of thing.

Good points. The stock mic has such a cheezy feel to it so just that alone makes you want to change it out.

Seems to me if you plug in a 6 pin wired mic the voltage from the radio could fry the mic element so one better be sure a different mic needs phantom power or cap off the pin 6 wire.

I have used a Ranger SR mic. $25 and a $9 adapter. Works good.

It's also "fine tuned approved"

Yeah that stock Mike looks crappy but it sounds good. I tried a sr198 noise cancelling mike on it. It sounds good and clean but not enough punch. I usually go with either the stock Mike or my rf limited 2018 extreme. Both drive the radio well.

Electret condenser mics will usually produce a greater likeness to your voice than your typical dynamic mic. The “cheesy” description of them should only relate to some of the cheap switches that’s often seen plus lighter weight that’s commonly associated with most of these smaller mics. The SL-41 and the Uniden BC645 are two of the exceptions that will give you an Electret element mounted inside an old school rugged case. With that said, I never spoil a good thing by trying to apply a mismatched Low Z dynamic mic to a circuit that’s designed for Hi Z. IMO that’s a downgrade. On the other hand, I often favor modifying a much older radio with a small phantom power circuit inside so that it will except these better sounding Electret mics. Also, I usually never toss out any old mobile mics unless they have a bad key switch. A good shell and key is all I need for a start. After a new modern cord is applied and an Electret element is fitted, its reincarnated life is better than the last one. If you want up and down buttons, most of the older dynamic mic shells will provide plenty of room for that task. A new mic cord and your time is your biggest expense. The enjoyment you had and the satisfaction you got after your homebrew mic is completed successfully....IMO worth more than any store bought wonder.

The 12 volt feed in the microphone connector is not for feeding an electret microphone. If you look at the mic schematic the 12 volt feed is for triggering the up / down channel feature.

That’s correct. The electret mic gets its phantom power from pin 1. For the purpose of using a different electret mic, Pin 6 and the common up and down connection that goes to pin 3 will no longer be needed, unless of course you want to custom install those buttons. You will still need Pin3. Pin3 is also your TX, and is grounded to Pin 5 during transmit.

I like those up / down buttons thats why i thought of getting that wireless mike. I want to be able to move around the room more. Im sure the cost is enormous, I dont want a crazy expense unless i get raging reviews from someone.

goto copper.com they have a electic condenser mic called the superstar 452 its a handheld power mic for around 20bucks.. id try that or a xtreame 2018. ive heard road devils on them they sounded ok but i thought stock mic sounded better .jmo

The stock Mic should sound virtually indistinguishable from a Heil PR781. If it sounds bad, it's time to find a new technician or plug in an Astatic 575m6 and crank up the treble so the low end distortion isn't heard.
