RCI 2980

Became friends with a local I talk to on the CB radio. I went down to his house to buy an old Astatic microphone, and he has tons of radio stuff that he has bought mostly from Hamfests.

Anyway, he offered to sell me a Ranger RCI 2980 for $100. There is nothing wrong with it, and works like it should. It looks like it is in very good condition. Would you buy it to use for a base station?

Tell me how to get in touch with him and you won't have to wonder if it's a good deal because it will be mine if he is close enough for me to go pick it up as shipping would be crazy. So where does he live? and what is his number?

RCI 2980 is is now my base station radio. It's a very nice radio.

I will need to upgrade the meter lights with some white LED. Transmits and receives very good. Best radio I have ever owned!

Congratulations on your new base! I'd love to find a nice condition older base but everything I find on fleebay has been hacked and butchered. I wouldn't part with that base, years ago I parted with a galaxy 2517 and connex saturn base to which I regret ever letting them go!

The 2980 really gets out on SSB. Was talking barefoot to Ontario, Canada from NC this past weekend on a trashy Antron 99.

now that you've got that nice radio, im sure one of your next steps will be to check out what mods can be done to it. that's what everyone does eventually.

before you go ahead with any of those adjustments or mods, please post your idea here on the forum.
you will get the benefit of everyone who has tried them before, and probably a good set of instructions on how to go about it.

Great news on your new radio. The 2995 is nice but you can add a small amplifier to what you have now and do better then a 2995. If you didn't want to run power then get your antenna higher up. Have fun.

I had the 2985dx for awhile. Nice rig, but took up to much realestate on my desk. Opted for a ps and a 2950dx, same radio basically in a moble version.
