I hadn't been following this but it looks like on May 18 the FCC voted to remove restrictions on distance on CB radio transmissions. They left current power levels as-is.

https://apps.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-344944A1.pdf

Wondering if CB manufacturers will use this in their marketing of CB radios - "Talk to other drivers on the road or talk across across the country to other CB users" - no license required! :)

Hopefully, they won't retroactively prosecute me for the 10,000 DX contacts I made in the last 3 decades :)

Wow? Thanks for the information. Everytime I would shoot skip I'd usually do so from under my bed. With a blanket thrown over myself and mic. I was waiting for them to smash down my front door with a sledgehammer. LOL of course. I'd venture to say a large proportion of 11 meter operators didn't even know that shooting skip was against the law. I actually myself only found out that it was illegal while reading a post on this very forum. And that was only a month or so ago. That kind of takes away the argument that is occasionally brought up by a few operators where else? Of course on 38 LSB. Most city's can't even enforce murder laws. I wonder how many operators were ever cited for actually shooting skip? Anyway. If it actually makes a difference it's a good thing they repealed that particular law. It was for a lack of words. Stupid! 73

That's just the government catching up with reality. Maybe 50 years late, but that's pretty quick for our government.
Maybe in another 50 years they'll open up the currently unused 26.1-27.9 mhz.

Yeah, a little late but better late than never. One interesting thing is that by passing this law they are recognizing that CB radio has moved into the hobby category rather than just a short range tool for drivers.

As for the FCC and my personal use, I don't think me shooting skip was ever an issue for them, it was my 10KW amp into the 8 element beam that they didn't like :) JK

It would be cool if they would increase legal power to 25 AM and 150 SSB.

When I used to read the FCC enforcement actions, it usually wasn't someone talking skip that was getting busted. It was the guys that ran big power out of band.

It's all really about ERP.

Sooo, if you are putting out for instance 4kw, then times it by the gain of your antenna, could be more or less, you are putting out more ERP then most Legal Broadcast Radio stations.. LOL... Not that its the same frequency , just an example of ERP Power..
