Texas Star DX 400 Input SWR

I took the case, lid and heat sink and washed them in the kitchen sink. Installed a new face plate and button covers too. I had to replace a couple of traces with flat braided copper, redid the power wire and verified the bias.

Like most transistor amps I have had, this one had an SWR problem on the output. The SWR would change depending on the drive level, I could turn radio power all the way down and get a 5:1! Turning the power up helps to squash the oscillating, but it still varies with the modulation. This is what happens when the builder tries to get every last watt. The solution is to double up on the negative feedback resistors, just add them in parallel. It doesn't take any noticable power away. I also removed the swamping resistors from the amplifier input in SSB mode, I can get 400w peaks on my Autek meter now.

Shadetree,
I would start with rubbing alcohol (70% or better) and a toothbrush. The alcohol will clean the solder flux but not sure about your "greenie's" in there though?
Recently, in cleaning the circuit board side of an old radio, it took about 3 passes with Q-Tips and alcohol to get down to the bare board. First go at it the board turned chalky white (I think I didn't wipe it off quick enough). Passes 2 and 3 resulted in much better results. I have used a small spray bottle and applied the alcohol to about a 1.5" square, scrub with the tooth brush and use Q-tips between solder leads, then clean/dry Q-tips to remove the residue and dry the board.

Don't use the 91% it will remove the labeling printed on the board for the components. Don't ask me how I know.........
