You definitely heard wrong, total Newbs do it fairly often and get full support from the Yahoo group...
The hardest part is soldering, unsolder a circuit board from the channel selector, solder a new board on, mount the 7805 regulator, solder 7 wires to the PLL, adjust the VCO to the proper voltage, thats about it.. Total cost is 70 bucks shipped...
I'm not involved in any way with this, just have done quite a few of them....
you end up with -79 to 108, plus all the A channels, no skips, no gay buttons, or switches...
Truthfully I would rate this just slightly harder then wiring a mic given all the PICTURES, and write up done to the install....

You can look over the full install docs at the yahoo group but here are the four major parts of the mod.
one is the Mod board itself, which has plug-ins for power, PLL. Selector, display, and optional scan/band switches. it is a PIC Microprocessor which controls PLL switching and the 3 digit display.
Channel selector board, de-solder original, solder in replacement, Install plug in cable from mod board.
Voltage regulator. mount in an existing hole, or drill a hole for mounting. Plugs into mod board.
Display board, cut to size and mount
Solder a few wires onto the PLL using the pictures as a guide..
After this do a quick/easy broadband mod, adjust up the VCO, and your done. Broadband mod and VCO are steps you would need to do with ANY proper channel expansion...
No +10 switch, roadmap, figuring out channel skips, and no hidden costs, $70 shipped, not a bargain, but good value for what you get. Was a bit cheaper before Mr.Jiggs started distro...
FDR board is another add-on which provides 5 digit digital frequency display. think this is about a $25.00 add on, which is completely optional, and not required.

Nice post but I still think I got it just right thank you very much. What the heck good is a radio that when I want to go to another channel and I tell my friend yea, I'm on channel -127. I think thats gay. So if I send my radio into a shop whats it gonna cost? You failed to mention that, I don't care how many you have done or how fast you can do one.
I can send say a Galaxy 959 to Doug at Custom cb radio, for about 50 bucks he can install a Viagra Board and use the HML tone setting controls for the 3 bands of channels. Very cool. Looking at all those pictures you posted thats a crap load of tech work to a radio. I'm sure a shop would charge north of 100 bucks for something like that.

Different strokes, and I happen to think anything named "Viagra" is GAY as well.... besides it doesn't take a brain surgeon to relate a specific channel to a frequency, aren't capable of adding, or subtracting "10" WHO CARES..... If you have a problem with that WHO CARES.... Aren't capable of installing it, WHO CARES.... Your entitled to your opinion, if you'd rather have some little add-on switch fine with me, I don't have to talk on your radios, nor do you have to talk on mine...

Everybody guages 'ease' with the amount of personal bother vs gain.
If it were me doing a extended freq's to this radio, I would probably just use a dial detent and use three reference oscillator crystals and broadband the receive.
But the other way has its cool points; so long as it makes the radio worth more if done cleanly.
