This should be interesting. Here's the question:

If you could choose any radio, mic, and antenna (36' in the air) for your CB base station, what would they be?

Caveat: We'll pretend all the manufacturers are still in business and as a result, all the equipment will be brand spanking new. Sorry, no amps, no exports, and no ham radios allowed.

And if you already have your dream base station, please tell us. You lucky dog. (y):)

Who'll start?

We have a differing opinion of what an "Ultimate CB station" would be, going by your criteria..
My "Ultimate Station" consists of a Cobra 19 DX, with factory mic and a 4 Ft. Firestik stuck on the top of my fridge.

first generation president madison or dwight d with a d 104 with a tug 8 stand and a hy gain 421a power meter, and hygain receiver preamp/on air light, amphenol rg-8u coax and coax jumpers,,,, all amphenol fittings,,,, 2 rohn towers spaced properly with a hygain penetrator on one and a moon raker 4 on the other with hygain ham VI rotor,,,,

Any radio, any mic, and any antenna at a height of 36 ft. Not sure how a Firestik on a fridge fits into that but I like it!;)

Come to think of it, that's not far from what I'm currently using. :ROFLMAO:
I have a Cobra 19 Ultra III, stock mic, and a dipole made from two 4' Firestiks in my attic. :D Think I'll take that apart and put one of them on my fridge! (y)

I would start with an optimal base antenna mounted @36' to the base of the antenna. 4 element Yagi and rotor is best for DX - in terms of cost vs benefits vs ease of installation. Then, a vertical antenna for local contacts mounted on the roof at least a wavelength away from the Yagi. Both are switched with a decent antenna switch.

After that, any radio of ones choice would be working optimally w/o the need of an amp. If you want both decent AM and SSB performance; then either a Cobra 2000GTL or a 5 pin Cobra 148GTL would be best. SO long as either radio hasn't had the limiter clipped and have been rebuilt and retuned.

Either a Turner +3 or an Astatic D-104 will be needed for best results.

I'd go back to my old rig: Realistic TRC 448 with a Turner +3 desk mic hooked up to my old Archer .64 wave omni-directional ground plane. Just a great sounding rig. With some real height it should do wonders.

Can the radio be modified? If so, the perfect setup would be:

Radio: SBE Console II with extra crystals so it can cover everything up to channel 40.
Mic: Turner +2 desk microphone.
Antenna: Avanti Sigma IV.

~Cheers~
