Viarable power mod for cobra 142 gtl

the version you are talking about will work for a short time. it will burn the pot out from the RF going through it. the 2 legs where it shows in the drawing you can put the pot there by its self or use a cap for the swing mod. with the pot you use. this mod done this way is not as hard as you are thinking. I would not use one of the stock pots to do the mod since it will burn it up after a while and stock pots are hard to come by. just put in a 1000 ohm pot to control the amount you want it to key. you can even put a resister across the legs to control how low the carrier will go . just look at it for a moment and you can see how to make it simple.

kaos, i'm curious as to why you feel you need this mod?
do you find yourself adjusting your AM deadkey a lot?

like, so often that removing the screws, taking the cover off, and adjusting the pot is too inconvenient?
I'm just curious as to your specific situation because i find that many people who want this mod don't really have a reason that they need it, and just want it because it's another mod to do.

Hello guys does anyone have to have the instructions how to add a viarable power mod to 142 gtl? thanks
I know nothing about moding repairing or adjusting radio equipment.
I send my equipment to Mike at Mikesradiorepair.com.
Mike hooked up my madison with a knob that he placed in the headphone jack in front of the rig.
I don't know if this is common or if your rig even has SSB but if it does and you're interested, the single variable knob adjusts both AM and SSB output depending on what mode your switch is in.
If your interested Mike's a good guy and will have no problem telling you how to do the mod.
If you can't reach him via the address I gave just put that address in YouTube and post the question under the video clip of my madison.
It's the one with the frequency counter and vfo.
As I mentioned Mike has absolutely no problem advising anyone on any question concerning any piece of equipment whether you're a customer or not. Good luck. 73

I decided to leave the radio stock

From my experience stock is good especially for a variable output.
If you plan on driving a Cb amp (low drive) get the output down to 1 1/2 watts.
All my amps have the best swing/pep when driven with 11/2 dead key. Good luck.

I can dig that kaos. I find that the variable power mods are really only useful to those who want to run one deadkey level when running barefoot, and one deadkey level when they use their amp.
If that is your case, and you do decide to do this mod in the future; go with the way Sonoma posted. it's the right way to do it.
best of luck.

I originally wasn't sure why I had the variable added to my madison. I have quite a few amps and some of them perform better when tuned with 11/2 and others do better with 3. It amazes me the difference in pep from one amp to another when their inialy turned.
Granted it's not often I switch out amplifiers but when I do that variable knob comes in handy. I also want to let you know for the record that it was seeing your madison that made me want to add the frequency counter end vfo. I am glad to report that I have finally moved up to HF and will be retiring the Madison. I hope I never have to use it again because if I do that means that my HF is acting up and that something I don't want to think of. On the other hand I'm going to miss the Madison. I've enjoyed it for about 16 months now and it's going to be difficult to put it in a box in the corner of the closet with the rest of the unused equipment. Have a great 4th of July Loose Cannon and be safe. 73.
