Wondering how you did it ?? What would you have done different?? Any regrets?? .. What I've been looking at ~ Stryker 955HP + 4 Pill or RCI69FFC6 or Super Star SS-158VC6 or ??? Got to have ~ 10m&11m, 6 digit counter, freeband capability, unlocked clarifier, plus other stuff I do not have to have.. It'll be run thru a good/great Shop so that everything is in line....
Any ideas or recommendations on just the radio and radio enhancements ??
Thanks Folks, 44 Dan (FNG)

Welcome Dan!
The Stryker 955 is hard to beat for AM and SSB. I run one with an X Force four pill and it is a great combination. It is actually made by the company that makes the Anytone radios and has the noise reduction feature for tx and rx. It is basically a digital DSP filter that takes the static sound out of the noise floor. The Ranger built radios don't have it and are behind the curve. The 955 can run a mic with an electret element if selected in the menu. I have been getting great results using an electret element from a telephone handset.

Thanks Chris... That's a great bit of info as I had no idea about that... That's the kind of info I'm looking for...
I'm leaning towards the All In One type of system because it'll get moved between my vehicle and my shack on occasion... Two separate pieces offers a much greater variety of equipment.. I'm adding up the advantages of one over the other and your info helps with the final decision...
Thanks Again, 73's Your Way

the 69FFC6 has bigger heatsink on the back of the radio vented top cover and a fan in the back to draw heat out and improve stability while the amps do get hot if you are a long winded talker but some things to think about your not going to overdrive the amp your not going to have 2 sets of power cords your not going to have to run a bunch of jumpers and if you have a switch installed you can turn the amp on and off when needed and not saves on heat and also makes it if you ever wanted to drive a bigger amp you could later down the road the C6 i have seen videos of people getting 720 watts

the LongHorn N6 is another radio that has a straight 6 fet amp section that people are seen to be getting 700-800 watts out of not a 6 digit counter though wish it was but has a large fan on it can turn the amp on and off from the front of the radio comes from the factory like that 951 uses one and talks in skip all the time

2970N4 uses 4 2879 transistors and gets you about 400-450 watts i know your looking for bigger but still a great radio it has split talk on one channel receive on another for repeaters not needed for 11m band has 6 digit counter and if you hit the man button it will show you 1-40 but you can go 10-11-12 meter bands just don't talk on the 10-12 meter bands as thats ham and requires a licence

the 2970N2 is the same as the 2970N4 but with 8 mosfets in the amp section and does 250 watts

the stryker 955 HPC is a great radio it has many things that are menu driven meaning nothing needs to be set on the inside of the radio but if you don't know what your looking at or doing don't mess with anything or you can ether mess up the tune or trash the radio it does 80 watts some people have swapped out parts and make claims of 100-150 but when shown elsewhere they don't do that much basically they are set up like a magnum s980 2 drivers and 2 finals

the 99N4 same amp section as the 2970N4 and same power output but has lighted face talk back and echo not a 6 digit counter though does have an amp switch from the factory is a nice radio

so what it boils down too is what do you like best voltages will play a roll into output but to high you blow up the radio and running the radio hard all the time will shorten its life amps are the same way and just because someone posted a video of a radio or amp doing a huge amount of power for 5 seconds does not mean they all do and does not mean they will do it all the time it gets real costly for people when they see that and think they can do the same thing and blow their gear up and don't seem to understand why

To be honest any of those ulta high powered radio's are a complete waste for many reasons. That is just way too much going on in a small space. Best bet is get a Stryker 955 with a clean conservative factory tune/alignment and match that up with a mic that sounds great with your voice type. Then add an external class AB amplifier that can do a comfortable clean 1000 watts. Enjoy, your done.

Thanks for all the Input as it is helping narrow down the final... Dropping a grand on a new radio system requires much respect and knowledge in my world.... I am glad I posted here... You Folks are alright in my book.....
Blackcat630 & 9C1Driver make great sense.... Tunercars and I think along the same lines... I'm leaning heavier into what Tunercars mentioned... I'm thinking of doing a combination of everybody's ideas here and maybe go with a little more powered radio and "maybe" adding a little more powered amp on down the road...maybe ,,,,,,
I really like the Stryker but I'd have to beef it up to where it would handle more just radio power, this has been done reliably many times OR just go with something like the SS-158VC6 that is what I'll try to turn the Stryker into ???.... .This is one of those situations where if I (me) put it on paper it answers itself... I think I'll go try to find some more info on that Superstar...
Thankyou Gentlemen
I'll keep y'all posted....

I almost forgot something about the 955. In the latest version, there is a provision to put a factory power board in it to increase the output to 100w if I remember correctly. There is a thread about it here somewhere, I will see if I can find it.

Maybe @Greg T knows?

you are correct bells cb just posted a video maybe the version 3 stryker with that added board and it was doing 120 watts watch?v=dekfqTqQ9dM copy this into youtube bells disabled playback of the video on other websites this is just show you

the Superstar SS-158VC6 is the same as the SS-158FB4 they stopped using the 2879 transistor and went to mosfets its cheaper and availability is better although i wished they would have went to HG transistors but it has 8 RT6 mosfets the RT mosfets are rebranded and have no cross reference so if ranger stops buying them or the main purpose of them stops you have no idea what will work in their place but ranger is not the only one that does that lots of companies do the problem is no company makes parts just for radios they all have other main purposes and when that stops or changes radio suffers so people complain about companies and how they make radios but really radio wouldn't even be a thing if using parts that are intended for other things in radios didn't happen some parts work better than others thats for sure but they have to make radios with what parts are available and if they have to fix them they need to buy in bulk but what happens when the bulk is gone and that part is no longer made they have to use what's next in line that's why some radios have better filtering and better this part and that part but at the time that part was great and available now its not lots of people don't seem to understand how this even works and people are hard on their radios and amps throw them around drop them slam stuff on them dump drinks on them and so on and so on but parts are hard to get and what is even harder is finding people to work on them and if you do then you have to wait 6 months or a year or two to get it back only to do it all over again people are crazy and if something is sent to the wrong tech and they trash it then your out your radio and money

Chris Holland at Superior CB makes amplifier sections with heat sinks that he puts on radios and he can put one on the Stryker 955 and make it do what you're looking for if you're looking for the striker with the amplifier I can send you the link to one of his videos that he did I believe it does somewhere between 4 and 500 watts He also makes them for other radios too that can do as much as the longhorn but it all depends on the radio's Drive If in fact that new Striker 955 version 3 does 100 or more watts it would be a good driver for the bigger amplifier the only thing I don't like about his amplifiers is the covers that he uses to keep the stray RF out could be a lot better if you open up the cover to a 2970N2/2970N4 or Longhorn or the Superstar and other radios they have a great enclosure for the amps to keep RF out of the radio thats about the only thing i would like to see done better other than that i like what he is doing its not cheap though but if you buy a nice radio and an amp jumpers good gauge wire your going to be into it for a lot 2 15ft runs of good wire of 4 gauge is 200+ by itself then the rest of what you need the thicker the wire the less amp and voltage drop you will have so you should run 4 gauge wire to them kind of radios i took a 2970N2 from a truck running it at 13.8-14 volts and the radio never did over 250 watts witch is great but when i put it on a 300 amp power supply at 13.8 on a 3-4ft run of 8 gauge wire it was getting close to 300 watts about 280 witch scared me at first because they shouldn’t be doing that but meters have a +- in tolerance so it could be that to and i was afraid it was going to blow it up but it didn’t that just showed that it picked up power because of the short power run and had no sag in amps and voltage and a steady 13.8 but in a car with it off your getting 12.5 volts and running while charging your getting 13.8-14.5 volts so it fluctuates and will show different power levels and the longer the run of wire the thicker it needs to be and should be OFC

Due to heat and stability issues, I would stay clear of the radio w amp section built in stuff. I would go with a radio and separate amplifier. It might be more of a hassle to move from mobile to shack but I think it's worth the effort. Look into quick disconnects for your power leads...
This option allows you to purchase an amplifier with real linear rated RF transistors. Something completely absent in today's "all in one radios".

here is another one and here is a 2950DX6

Now show it working stable on sideband, with the cover closed? Without a drop of RF shielding and 700 watts a fraction of an inch from all of the low power circuitry, this radio should be quite the oscillator, without a carrier swamping out the oscillations. Where is the decoupling for the radio's DC feed? The zener diode for bias, doesn't offer any thermal tracking. How is the spectrum analyzer sampling RF? Is it through an attenuator that has flat response through VHF? I'm sorry to be critical however, I've done this enough times to know that it's nearly impossible to achieve stable operation at this power level, without any shielding between the amplifier and radio.

it does have RF shielding he can't show you the amp with the shielding on but the cover he makes for it i think should be better like the LongHorn or 2970N2/2970N4/2970N3 99N2 99N4 SS158FB4 69FFB4 and so on you should message him and ask him he will talk to you about it
