What is the SSB mobil CB these days.

Was going to buy a SSB mobil for something new as a base set up at the home shack.I like the Galaxy radios and was wondering what would be the best in the 40 ch models. I know Ranger might be more stable but wanted to try a Galaxy. Looking at the DX-959 or 959B

I second @sp5it posted. The Uniden PC 122 is a nice little radio. I have had one on the bench here as a back up for a long while. Slap a good mic on it and it'll talk and it's affordable entry level gear.

If you are 100% interested in SSB base thr bit the bullet and get a ham rig and have it modded for 11. No "cb" made is going to work better on ssb.

Sorry I re-read the post and you want mobile, Kenwood TS-50, ICOM 706 will blow away any normal or export "cb".

To be honest, Galaxy versus Ranger - Ranger owns Galaxy now so it is a factor of how much you're willing to spend and the warranty you get from either - since they are owned by the same...

Personally, I like Galaxy but Ranger has the warranty and holds that Galaxy company...

So You're good any way you go, but the only thing you didn't mention is the 979 but no frequency counter...

As for Drift, yes, but when you said Home use, well, even the DX2517 or Ranger 2970N2 will still drift even in a controlled temperature environment - so no matter what you do or go to - or decide to use, that choice of stability takes more as an effort in engineering to produce so you will have to go up several levels into Ham / Amateur equipment - Meaning $$$. Else Galaxy may be more price competitive in the long term. But then anything under a hot soldering iron these days - warranty and repair issues are gonna happen when modding or hot-rodding equipment.

Maybe a Galaxy 949 and buy the FC 347 6 digit frequency counter.

I like the styling of the older Galaxy 979 without the frequency counter, but don't care for the backlighting.

And you get to regret buying a P.O.S. Brand new right out of the box. The Ranger Company owns Galaxy and since they are farther down the food chain they don't always get the primo parts. I owned several Galaxy radios and gave them away and threw some in the trash. The drift problem is shameful.

That is what has kept me from buying a Galaxy radio. I really like the design of them and I know they sound good on AM and I have heard a couple that sounded very good on sideband, that's if I was being told the truth about what radio the guy was talking on.

I would suggest the UNIDEN 980SSB because it is very stable & does not have the drifting issues of the Galaxy & Ranger radios.I love my 980SSB & it has a very good receiver & I get great audio reports as well.Nice display with plenty of bells & whistles.I always leave the Talkback in the OFF position & don't understand why it was even installed at all? Other than that unwanted extra it's a great AM/SSB radio for a base or a mobile.
