That's what I was hoping for. It will make life a lot simpler. Plus having the unmodified board is a plus. My soldering skills are good enough for government work but probably best left from modifications that aren't absolutely necessary lol!

You need to modify the mode switch to use the AM filter.

The upper slot where the accessory filter goes is wired to the "CW" position of the mode selector. When an AM filter is present in a radio with a stock mode selector, you'll hear the pitch of the receiver noise much higher than the way the noise sounds in sideband modes when you switch to CW. And the sound of AM will be unchanged, just like it was with the top filter slot empty.

Pretty sure the mod to make the accessory filter activate for AM mode is posted at foxtango.org. It's in the Yaesu service manual. Involves moving around wires and one end of a diode IIRC.

Well I found out my issue wasn't with the driver tube after all but rather with the tube socket in some capacity. I added the AM filter and rewired the mode switch yesterday. During the process of turning the rig over I slightly bumped the driver tube....and I mean slightly (case was off). Anyways I put her back together and fired her up. Let her sit for 45 minutes before I began the tuning process and then I experienced the same problem as before. No amount of jiggling or wiggling the tube changed anything. So, I killed the heaters momentarily and pulled the driver and replaced it with the original. I turned the heaters back on and let it sit for 5 min and then began to tune and it worked just as it should. Should I spray DeoxIT in it? Do the think the socket is damaged? Your thoughts would be appreciated

Clean with Deoxit. Use a dental type pick and push the terminals a bit to see if you can tighten them. Buff the tube pins a bit and get them to shine.

Don't use any kind of abrasive on the surface of the tube socket's spring contacts. Brush, solvent, compressed air won't damage the plated contact surfaces. Abrasives will.

Don't forget to swab the pins of the tube for schmoo as well.
