Happy Hamer - Thanks so much for posting excellent pictures and instructions on making this mod on FT-897Ds. I'm building an emergency communications network and several members are using the radios you discussed. Being able to communicate with people who use Baofeng, Quansheng and a host of other similar radios, plus operators using MARS, 27 MHz., FRS, MURS and GMRS frequencies (and possibly monitor 156.8 MHz. where appropriate) would be incredibly helpful for us and make us useful to users trying to contact us using these radios/frequencies. My understanding is that this mod will permit TRANSMITTING on the 27 MHz. band, however receiving was not mentioned specifically. My guess is that this mod will allow receiving on the 27 MHz. band as well, but I don't want to assume and then disseminate inaccurate information to other members. Also, has anyone had experience with auto tuner performance on the expanded HF frequencies? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again to you for your very useful and practical work and to others for their helpful comments.

It already receives on 27 MHz without the mod. Not sure which autotuner you're using, but most should work fine.

When you do the mod you loose the auto repeater offset function.
You can still enter the offsets manually.

Loss of offset has been part of mods for eons. You'd think by now, that they'd account for that and write code to compensate. I wonder, if in fact, the 8xx flavors and others, could just expand HF only, or vice versa.

Not that I know of.
It would be nice if they would fix that but I am sure they could care less.
