how to-ham

When you can consistently take the practice tests and average in the 80's, you ought to be ready for the real test (higher average means greater chance of passing, naturally). One hint on 'taking' the test is to never leave an unanswered question. If you don't know the answer, select one anyway. Can't count off any more than if you didn't answer, and there's always the chance of guessing it right. The question pools are changed periodically, no idea what the schedules are, but theres usually plenty of notice before a change. If you have even a little idea of what the subject matter is all about, a change in the question pool isn't that much of a 'biggy'. It's going to be the same basic stuff.
You might check around for a VEC near you (the ones giving the tests). It's nice if you don't have to go very far to take them. Testing is given periodically, how often just depends on the VEC team. Can't remember what the fee is but it'll be less than $20 for the foreseeable future.
And one last hint. Unless you're testing for the 'Extra' class license, if you pass one, take the next higher class test! JUST take it anyway, you never know how much has 'soaked in', you might get further than you think, lots of people have.
