11 meter is very quiet?

I finally got my Cobra 139 XLR out of storage and hooked it up Saturday. I made some barefoot contacts to the northeast US with it just using an inverted v dipole up about 22 feet.

I added a small heater to it and was able to talk to a station in Australia later that night. Hopefully soon I will have a better antenna up. I'm trying to get my 700 sq foot cabin put together and it is taking longer and costing more than I planned.
I have the bedroom, bathroom and utility room completed.

Anyways, i forgot just how good the receive is on the old 139. I listened to myself on a sdr site and must say the radio does sound good on transmit as well.
On another note, it seems half the people on 38 have gone crazy with all the beeps, recordings, music playing and trash talking. These guys are there all day every day. I just don't get it.

Turned on the base station this morning and didn't sound promising so I worked outside all day like a crazy young guy until my back side was dragging and everything hurt. I put most things away and decided to go get a cappuccino and was pleasantly surprised to hear the dx rocking around 4:30 PM. Gave a few shouts but face the facts I must be one of those Mud Ducks you talk about ! LOL

quack quack. been down that rabbit hole before too

Good Morning all, planning on being on the Air around 2pm today on 35 USB if the conditions cooperate, haven't been on the radio too much this past week due to work and getting over a viral infection and Dad being sick also, hopefully I can make contact with other members out there this afternoon!

There's a CME happening. MUF has come down below 40 metres.
Hi VA7JHI ! Welcome to the forum!
You are almost my neighbour..... I see you are in PR, I am just across the water from you on an island about 40km to your northwest.

I strictly work 11 meters, but it has been open every day despite the low MUF. I just worked French Polynesia yesterday (201 div) and had Senegal the day before (46 div). Conditions have not been as good as they were, but they are still there even on 11 meters.

Hope to hear you on 11 sometime.....

I had good conditions most of the day. Pretty much any time I was in the radio room, I was making contacts mostly in the northwest and Cali. I did make it to NY and PA a few times.

Welcome to the forum VA7JHI!!

Edit: conditions were also good on FM 26.805
I don't have an HF antenna at present. I've got the materials, but the weather's been horrible. Soon!

Quadra? Never been there.

I like islands. Used to live on Salt Spring, but it got too busy and expensive.

Powell River is like an island — no road access.

Glad 11 is working for you! I don't have an HF antenna presently. Going to put one up when the weather improves.

No, I'm on the south end of Cortes. It's possible I know you from way back when..... I lived on Saltspring from 1986 to 1994 and I was a big part of the channel 10 & 15 radio group there at the time. Maybe you remember Buddha Jim and Woodchuck Doug and all those hell raisers LOL! Then I went to Hornby for ten years and then came up here in 2004.
So I've raised five kids on three island now. I'm also involved in broadcast radio...... I'm technical director up here at CKTZ 89.5 FM, among other things.

No, I was on Salt Spring from 2006 through 2021.

Cool! I got my US First Class Phone ticket when I was thirteen, but never worked in a station, getting a job at a shop repairing commercial two-way instead. My high school buddy (whom I took the test with) was station engineer at WQTE, Monroe, Michigan.

I really need to get an HF antenna up. My eyes are on four tall trees to make a loop, but I need a good sling-shot… :-)
