My bad, I should have said that there are no police reports anywhere in the country to that effect. I think someone is just trying to stir the pot with a fake spoon.

Since I'm "some other forum shop", I guess I should chime in. This is the first I've heard of 292 being accused of ripping someone off. I haven't had time to do a lot of forum browsing in the past year or so, so I'm a bit behind the times perhaps. I did find a report at Rip-off Report: 292 Radio...
This is messed up. No more than 30 seconds after I posted this, I found what I needed. Here's a link to a PDF of the service manual:

I know this is an old post, but I'm looking for a schematic for this unit, as well. I came up empty on the BAMA website, and other searches have proved empty (other than high-priced manual sources).
I wouldn't hesitate to run that radio with a Texas Star Sweet 16. You'll definitely need to be careful with the installation, and have someone with a good scope attached to an antenna tune it in after its installed.
I agree, the Uniden stock mics will sound better than the Cobra stock mics. And the Uniden external speakers are very good for the $$, too.
As for your antenna issues, I think i'd pick either a 2' or 3' Firestik tunable antenna and mount it on a small spring to bend if its in brush. As long as...
If the size of the 2950 (same size as the Cobra 148GTL) is ok, then I'd look into the Stryker brand. That's the only brand I use anymore for most of my systems.
If it were me, I would get a regulated supply big enough to run my radio alone, then find one of those big, high-wattage buck/boost transformers that sell so cheaply (20-40 dollars) on Ebay and add a couple large diodes and a few filter caps to it to make a nice 16-18v unregulated supply for my...
Yeah, after I sent him that, I realized I'd worded it a bit incorrectly. My point was that information in sites linked to from my site constituted content from those sites, not mine. Didn't matter, he hasn't stepped up to the plate to respond to the challenge.
Wow, it took them all of 36 hours this time to ban me. I even got an email from Mr RadioActive himself stating "Sir-

I'd like to look at a thread posted on the CB Radio Talk forum, but I've been permanently banned from there by one of its sponsors, namely Radioactive Radio. The thread link is http://www.cbradiotalk.com/viewtopic.php?p=165360&sid=6e5bb8b542a7101894533278d6d13b0d

One other part that I've found failed more than a few times is the bridge rectifier, but that usually fails by shorting out, NOT opening up. I agree with SS8541, its likely the main power passing transistor.
