I'm glad to see that this thread is still seeing action this long after it was started.
Has anyone come up with any kind of fix for the problem with blown drivers in this radio? I mean besides turning the output levels down.
I would start by testing to see if the LSB voltages at the oscillator are at the right level. You could have a switching problem causing them to be off.
I didn't pull up the schem to see where that cap was in the circuit. Do you have output from the replaced FET? Its possible that a trace came loose while replacing the RD16. I've taken to installing them with a bend up in the leads, then back down to a single point on the board to avoid having...
I ended up turning one down to about 200 or 300 ma for a customer, and it seems to work just fine. I've often wondered if the 1.3A factory recommendation was a typo, and its supposed to be 130ma....
I need to locate a wiring diagram/schematic for this version of the Staler XX. The hi-low switch for the extra channel band has been disabled, and whoever did it left no trace of the original wiring behind. The radio is in beautiful shape and works fine, except for no extra channels....

Ok, this thread has been beaten to death, burried, dug up and beaten to death again, rotted into a stinky puddle, and then beaten to death some more. Plenty of good stuff, but enough is enough already.
It boils down to this: IF the 98 is tuned correctly, you CAN use it without difficulty to run...
Why not just get a fixed IP addy from your ISP and host it out of your own machine? I host a half dozen or so websites right from the computer I use here. Fairly easy to do, and very cheap. If you can't get a fixed IP addy from your ISP, you can set up a dynamic DNS account for free from a...
My choice would be tune it for max performance, then insert a resistor between the output of the modulation circuit and the input of the RF choke which supplies the collector of the driver. Make sure you use half-watt resistors, or double-up quarter-watt units. Select the resistor value that...
For the cap between the driver and the final where they say to put the 68, I use anywhere from 150 to 330 depending on results I see. I also remove the cap that goes from the input of the final's input resistor to ground. As for the other 68 cap, I rarely use that high. Sometimes I see best...
Sounds like something is shorted in the TX meter circuit, probably to some voltage source outside of the TX meter circuit. Look for metal debris around the TX meter circuits. I've seen that happen a number of times. You may also have a shorted part that is NOT in the meter circuit, but is...
4 of each is extreme over-kill. You'll only need 1 of each to do the job. If you're worried about uneven illumination, just use a fine-grade emery cloth or very fine nail file to score up the clear surface of the high-brightness LED. That will diffuse the light giving even illumination.
