    AL-811H

I bought a FTDX3000 about a year ago, sold off my TS-570SG & TS-480 to finance the purchase. Even though I have one of the latest radios I still rely on a AL-80B & a Palstar 1500DT tuner. The newer solid state amps are convenient, ditto the auto tuners but the amps won't tolerate even a...

    Power loss at antenna ?

Lowest swr is not always the resonant point. I prefer to see the lowest reactance on the analyzer even if swr is not the lowest reading.

    Chassis condition

Nice find, had one back in the 70's. I doubt if it was in a fire. Possibly stored in a humid environment or owner was a heavy smoker. I have seen other older radios where the chassis just patinas as it is bare carbon steel, not plated alloys like newer rigs.

    Soldering Iron recommendation?

I have the older version,836 plain looking but works well. Picked up a set of teweezer irons NIB for less than $100 in clearance Also have the 808 Desoldering kit. If you do a lot of work on older through hole boards a good de-soldering set up will save a lot of grief..

    Yaesu FT1000MP or Icom 7300

Unless their policy has changed from 10 years ago Yaesu will not support discontinued models. I needed a part for a FT-840 & even though they still had it in stock at Cypress CA. the gent on the phone told me they were not allowed to sell it as the radio was discontinued.Fortunately I found what...

    antenna height?

Depends on the angle the signal arrives. Low angle - a ground mounted will rec. it better than one in the nose bleed section. also low antenna works good for nvis if both stations have one.
