    Getting the ticket

No, I used books in 1984 for my Tech/General theory and a Hypercard stack (early hyperlink/hypermedia system) on a Mac in 1992 for Advanced/Extra. Both formats worked fine, the thing is to have the book/software/website generate multiple example exams from the real question pool.

Rarest cb / export you’ve owned

Lafayette Telsat SSB-50, built around a Cybernet board I think. Rockbound (crystal controlled) 23 channel mobile radio with sideband. Tossed it in the early 1990s when purging all non-synthesized and tube gear from the radio pile. Maybe should have held onto it, some guy in Italy has one up...

    10 meter is very quiet?

I've been playing around with the leftover Field Day antenna, a 135 ft. doublet/dipole fed with 450 ohm ladder line into a 1:1 current balun and then into an auto tuner, a mAT-Y200 connected to the FT-891 running 75W. Made 3 or 4 10 meter phone contacts on Sunday, all regional out to 700 miles...

    Reasonable transportable static mobile antenna?

There's a European CBer, Max Mountain World on YouTube, from Scotland but living in the ski resort areas of the French alps. Drives around in a car and puts up a Moxon beam on a push-up mast at various points on mountain roads. Here's a couple videos on the setup...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I'm stuck at the home QTH this week, and have been monitoring 38 LSB the last few days. Not much activity Mon/Tue at all. Set up a program scan 36-40 LSB, nothing breaking squelch other than lightning strikes with the approaching afternoon thunderstorms and then I unplug. Worked a local 30...

    Question on FRS versus GMRS....

This thread is about GMRS. No license test, you just register on the FCC website, pay the $35, and you're licensed for the GMRS service for 10 years. You do have to play by the GMRS Part 95 rules, especially on the repeaters.

    Question on FRS versus GMRS....

Just buy a GMRS license for $35, good for 10 years. You'll probably want a repeater-capable radio, anyway, and those are usually high power with external/removable antennas and require the license.

    11 meter is very quiet?

Put up a horizontal dipole last weekend at the house and just worked 951 SoCal this morning from the Albuquerque area on 38 LSB with the barefoot Uniden 980SSB.

    11 meter is very quiet?

I don't think most people on a US-based CB board are going to understand the term "Muppets" (children's TV program in the 1970s/1980s) as referencing the 27/81 UK FM band, so here's an origin quote from transmission1.net...

    11 meter is very quiet?

I worked Kentucky on the morning commute, about 8:15am Mountain time here Monday in the desert southwest. Worked Illinois over the weekend. 38LSB full of garbage and QRO stations, so went 37 LSB and 39 LSB.

    11 meter is very quiet?

Band is open 1pm Mountain time Saturday here in New Mexico. I've had Ch6 Super Bowl coming in on the 2 ft whip on the indoor scanner all morning. When that happens, the band is pretty open. Weather good today, so time for mobile antenna maintenance. Put a new DX Engineering correct-sized...

    11 Meter Radios AM/SSB/FM

It's the same, the FCC adopted the European CEPT modulation standards.

    11 meter is very quiet?

Crazy skip day Friday. Booming into the desert southwest here on 37 & 38 LSB were New York, Ontario province, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia. At sunset Tasmania, Australia (43WR44) coming in from across the Pacific. Was only...

    11 meter is very quiet?

Last Friday (Dec 3) on 38 LSB around 11am Mountain time I called some loud station in Alabama or Georgia, I forget which, and got Louisiana instead. But that was the last DX skip for me these past 7 days.

    First AM/FM FCC Approval

No PL/CTCSS or DCS squelch? Even cheapo blister pack FM radios have a CTCSS/DCS squelch these days.

Farthest 11 meter DX contact and equipment used?

Quoting the Wikipedia: CB Radio enthusiasts often exchanged colorful QSL cards, especially during the height of CB's popularity in the 1970s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QSL_card#Usage_in_CB_radio

Farthest 11 meter DX contact and equipment used?

SoCal to the Great Lakes region, about 2,000 miles stock Uniden 980SSB on 38LSB at 10 watts 2 foot SuperFlex on a hood channel mount on a Ford van

    11 meter is very quiet?

Here's the current 10 meter sideband map. Not stellar, one guy in 5-land working into South America.

Vintage Lafayette HB-333 CB Base Radio

The 625's "silencer" was a noise blanker in the RF section of the receiver in addition to the standard ANL in the audio section, which the 525 had. Still can buy a cheap CB today with just ANL, but you'll pay more for a radio with ANL plus a true RF noise blanker. I had a 525 conversion to 10...

    First AM/FM FCC Approval

Don't understand why only 8 memories in the President Thomas radios. There's a lot more combinations of channel/mode/PL tone than 8. Even the Lincoln II+ only has 6 memory channels.
