Cost for my tower so far:
Rohn AX40, already disassembled w/ unused "dirt drum" base - $125 on craigslist, 40 miles away
Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer (galvanization was mostly gone) - $13
Rustoleum Smoke Gray Paint - $38
Acetone - $5
1/8" wall, 1.25" OD DOM tubing (fabbing concrete legs) - ~$40...
It would be fun for VHF/UHF/SHF though!
Plus, it opens up the possibility for phased arrays, multiple yagis with different tx/rx characteristics, and best of all, chicks dig big towers. :D
If you've got the space, hitting the 200 ft market isn't hard. Rohn 45g are under $300 per 10 ft section. Add a couple miles of guywire, and you've got a godlike setup for all bands.
Load the tower up for 80m or 160m, and work some DX. :D
All Glocks have a mushy trigger pull, with a somewhat long pull thanks to the design.
I carry with an HK P7 or a Springfield 1911A1. Both have very short, sweet, and crisp trigger pulls.
Don't get fixated on one brand. Try everything, then make your decision.
There's a Vertex Standard handheld that covers AM-Airband and 2m FM-Amateur.
However, the FCC made Vertex Standard stop selling them...they didn't like that they were putting two separate services on one rig.
The Cobra 19 DX IV that your friend has isn't exactly the pinnacle of perfect circuitry. While YOUR radio automatically kicks the RF gain way down when it senses overload, his does not.
Actually, try doing that the manual way...turn his RF gain down and see if it still does that...I think...
Do you mean it makes a "BEEEEEEEEEEEEP" on his radio when you key up on yours and try to talk? Sounds like fundamental overload...in short, your vehicles are too close together, and it's overloading the receiver.
The telescoping 5/8 wave that Diamond makes is a superb performer. However, fully extended, it's quite unwieldy. It also puts a lot of strain on the antenna jack.
I'm using an Diamond SRHF40 on my Yaesu FT270R. It was a bit too flexible, so I put 2 layers of heatshrink on it to stiffen it up...
You sir, are quite awesome indeed.
Put an orange flag on top, and you're all set for state parks & dune'in.
Oh, quick comment.
The mount you're using, is it one of the clamp on types? They're not very strong, and if you run that antenna on the trails, if it gets smacked hard enough...
