COBRA 2000 GTL SOLD ON eBay FOR $900.00

Watched Snake's video on this Cobra 29 . . .

He used a VU meter to align the receive. Hey Snake; get a SINAD program and try to learn how to do it right.
http://www.comtekk.us/sinad.htm
Think the first week is free; might give it a trial.

Another thing: when aligning a receiver, use no more than 4uVs from the sig gen. Otherwise, the AGC circuit will cut in and skew your results.

A VU meter cannot tell the difference between signal, noise, or distortion. So, all you've done is got all three mushed together - and call it 'peaking the receiver'. Nothing could be further from the truth. You could use your ears with a speaker and do what you are doing with that VU meter and attain the same lack of accuracy. No real advantage or difference. Either way is wrong. Net result will also likely yield front-end overload.

It's true that you've gotten better gear; but are still as yet unable to utilize them.

Take all of this in and do better. Or, disregard it all and comtinue not getting any better at it.

Not putting you down.
If I wanted to put you down, I'd have called you a dipstick, and left it at that . . .

his service monitor has a sinad meter inbuilt i belivie ..
but yes you are right re the uv meter he is using..what we dont see is what its hooked up to ..
guessing some ac to dc circuit of some sort on the speaker lead to measure audio level?...if so all its reading is signal + nosie+ audio (from gen )...
what gets me is the service monitor has a sig gen inbuilt also why use the other thing?.

best not comment no more or i wil get another 2 weeks of abusive emails from him and he will be despressed for another 6 months telling all his customers how much he hates me (why i only speak the truth)

I like most of us in here have forgotten more about electronics in one day than he has gained in a lifetime

i am glad he followed my advise and brought the service monitor and signal gen..pity he does not use the scope he got ,or hook it up to the service monitors scope output instead of using the internal one that looks like it needs a service

as for his driveway cleaner and wash method...open the coils and channel switch I beat the AZ sun has not dried them out

poor timmy he does try hard

LOL - I sold N8FGB two CPI radios that I had - some four years ago. One was the base radio, and the other was a mobile radio. He restored them - as I remember. Was just wondering if uses them as his daily driver radio any more.

I've had/used three CPI radios in the past.
Built to last; like a battleship.

Say, What?

From a business standpoint I get it now, it makes sense.. this is why so many "new peaked & tuned custom radios" pop up on Ebay, now I am not bashing this guy because If my intention was to profit then I would align myself with his tactics... but here we go

Take for instance a "skywalker 29" This is a 100$ radio, with two stickers and one blue LED for the s-meter, a few diodes for the "EARS MOD", connex echo (probably an rf limited br-1 echo board), and a blue channel indicator all of a sudden it becomes worth triple the initial price tag?? HUH? WHAT?
This one kills me the most because an educated person can tell it's a ripoff, yet this guy probably sells a crap ton of these things.. "Galaxy Finals" or "BIGGER FINALS", man it's a single final radio come on...

We know a sticker on the faceplate, and a few diodes do not equal hundreds of dollars worth of work. But does the average or newbie user understand the difference?
Taking advantage of people is wrong, ultimately though the responsibility always falls on the consumer to educate themselves and do homework before spending money..
New Modulation Swing Kit, for 1 Watt Dead Key, with Full OutPut Power. Very Loud!!
Oh I bet it looks great on the 'scope!

Some of these types of "custom radios" could be warranty returns / refurbished units! Bought in bulk (Like pallet loads), and then "customized" & resold as "new", so the initial purchase price of the new radio may not even reflect what the SkyWalker guy has initially invested; for all we know he could have as little as 60$ total into each radio and he then "flips" them for $350 all day long online.
This is purely speculation, for all I know he is buying radios at retail prices and pays a mod-shop to "customize" it for him, and he tacks on a hundred bucks to what they billed him, and he still profits, best case scenario for his profit is that he buys the radios in bulk (maybe refurbished) and does the "work" himself with cheap Chinese parts also bought in bulk.

Do I agree with Skywalker? Well that doesn't matter here, the point is that he provides a product/service that some people are willing to pay for.. (They think it's worth it) He is making money.
Should I get mad at McDonald's when they sell french fries at a huge mark-up? I know how to cook french fries, I can buy raw potatoes/oil and cook them myself for much less money by the pound, do I get mad at the consumer who "foolishly" spends more then the product is worth? Nope it's their choice, maybe the convenience is worth it to them.

Just food for thought.

I know the entire story in this radio. Tim did do it, but it was very messed up so it was redone by a tech in the south. That radio was an awsome sweet radio, great rx and great tx. looked all most new. one of the nicest cobra 2k I have ever seen or heard. having said that, it was a steal at 300 bucks. maybe worth 350, 400 shipped. that radio didn't sale.

People like bling (god I hate the term) and bling sells. Lipstick on a pig, its still a pig.

I bought one new when they first came out way back when. Never liked it, and ended up trading it for a Galaxy Saturn.

ive had at least 10 in my lifetime. not a bad radio. if
it is set up right. but most people rip out the limiters,
its there for a reason. cobra don't put in extra parts. then they put in the famous swing mod. 1 watt d,k swing 20 watts or more. then they sound like crap.
then of course you need the echo board got to drill holes in the radio.
i think you get my drift. buy a radio keep your fingers out. you will have a good sounding 2k
