Ultimate CB Base Station

I'm going to go with my old friend "Night Prowler's" setup. Tram D201A, Silver Eagle D104, Phantom 13 tube amp, Wilson Shooting Star, and Taylor .64 wave Grand Slammer ground plane.

73,
Brett

Back in the 70's, the King of the big stations locally had a Tram Titan 2, Turner Plus 2, a 250 watt tube amp (brand unknown), running into stacked 4-element yagis on a 50 ft. tower. He also had an Antenna Specialists Super Magnum 1/2 wave as his general purpose monitoring omni. Back then, seemed like everybody either had a Super Mag or a Hy-Gain CLR2, by far the two most popular base antennas.

Crystal clear audio, talked anywhere he wanted.

Any SSB Cybernet chassis with uPD858 or 02A. A cheap Chi-Com electret mic, phantom power preamp, a discrete component home stereo eq, reverb, and a tube compressor like Demco since those adjusted the compression dynamically real time and they were easily hooked into receive as well. Crank-up tower with a Jo Gun SA-4 beam, 5/8th wave omni and a dipole.

If we want to get rare a CPI SSB 40ch radio or a Stoner 40ch or one 23 ch tube/solid state hybrids with a Siltronic VFO maybe a Sonar?!?!?

AM? Viking II CDC
SSB? TRC-457-458
Turner SS
5/8 way up
broadside/co-phased array pointed at where I intended to do maximum damage.
Beverage at least 6 directions into a DX-302 (gear mod, loop mod, adjustable audio filter, the usual)
Dow Key relays for T/R
Triplet of 6146 drivers
813 x 2 with 2850 on top in gg

Never was much for beams, towers, and rotors.

Okay the Viking was odd, old, and, weird even when I was young but with appropriate modifications even the 4D32 was okay but as the surplus market dried up most were changed to 6146's.
The Uniden 858 chassis? ask around. I'd rather have the 458 than the GTL2K.
The 5/8 needs to have a brutal matching network, enough to handle a KW, or two.
The array is what you do if you have 30A service out in the woods or run off generator/wind/solar/batteries. Point it at where ever you want to terrorize. Just remember it works both ways.
That is the reason for the Beverage antennas. Point them at what you want to hear and listen with a good receiver. I figure the DX-302 for a better match to a CB station than a Frog 7.

The icing so to say is the 6146 driven 813's . This isn't your dads sweep tube box. This is real bang for the buck, old school RF. I don't recommend anyone start into uncharted territory with the 813 without a little experience. 3KV DC power supplies don't injure or hurt, they kill. They kill tubes as well. Now days with better caps and rectifiers it's a bit easier. I leave the input, interstage, and final matching to the imagination. Hint, Pi-L output tuning works.
The Dow Key relays are just something I found out about years ago that have made my life either easy or in the case of a damp environment make it a minor nightmare. Oh that's right you said no......

It ain't odd or weird. Nice setup. Just good American Iron that will sound good 40 years from now too.

This should be interesting. Here's the question:

If you could choose any radio, mic, and antenna (36' in the air) for your CB base station, what would they be?

Caveat: We'll pretend all the manufacturers are still in business and as a result, all the equipment will be brand spanking new. Sorry, no amps, no exports, and no ham radios allowed.

And if you already have your dream base station, please tell us. You lucky dog. (y):)

Who'll start?

I always wanted the Cobra 2000. But never liked whan I've heard described as the piano style design. And since you did not add modifications to your caveat I did the next best thing.
Modified my third-generation Uniden Madison by installing a frequency counter (imo a better 2000). The best antenna I myself ever owned was a sigma four, and that would be my choice as far as the antenna goes. I would have chosen the Astatic 1104c, but didn't know about them back when they were being produced, but my fet modified Silver Eagle sounds terrific with the Madison (on SSB) , and although I don't know if the d104 fet modification existed back when, I certainly would've wanted one if it did. I wanted the sonar FS 2340, and that's what I bought in 1980 (still have it.)
Always used and unamplified d104 with the sonar, and still do. I would have liked to owned the Demco modulator for use with the sonar but didn't own one until I got back on the air about 3 years ago. My original meter was the three window micronta/radio shack, and thought it was the shit as opposed to actually being shit. I lost interest in the hobby around 87 and don't know if Autek was making the wm1 then, but if they were I would've liked to own one (I do now) I guess the only thing I'm missing from my dreamstation would be that Sigma 4 at the proper height (36') I still have the original sigma 4 manual/booklet that came with the antenna, but the antenns long gone. If anyone would like the manual/booklet for the sigms let me know I've no use for it. 73 PS I know that's actually two stations, but In my defense the Madison is my SSB radio and the sonar my AM.

Come to think of it, that's not far from what I'm currently using. :ROFLMAO:
I have a Cobra 19 Ultra III, stock mic, and a dipole made from two 4' Firestiks in my attic. :D Think I'll take that apart and put one of them on my fridge! (y)
How does the dipole in the attic work for you? Do you get out a good distance? I have a dipole and been wanting to put it in the attic. Just wasn't sure how good it would work.

Yours is one fine looking Madison. Best I've ever seen.
I believe loosecannon posted pictures and a description of what he did to his madison. It was his madis0on that gave me the idea to modify mine.
His is incredible. I think it safe to say it's the sweetest Madison out there. Besides the recap all I had done was add the frequency counter, vfo (both purchased from eBay) and Mike added a SSB AM variable output knob where the 1/4" headphone jack is. That's it.
Loosecannon did so much more to his. And it's awesome. Defeneyly a one of a kind. 73. PS sorry for going off topic.
