So since we haven't seen any movement of a frequency modification for the 980 yet I'm thinking maybe as a collective the CB community needs to sweeten the pot and maybe someone with the computer/radio skills can crack it. Maybe some Chinese guy who worked on the software can give help us out if we offer a little incentive :)

Seriously though - if we got 1000 CB'er to donate $10 towards the freeband crack on the Uniden 980 you would think we could get someone to take on the task.

And I'm talking a real solution, not changing out a bunch of stuff to get to .455 while the display still shows .405 :) I'm talking a software solution.

After messing around with this wireless microphone on the 980 this last week I again was blown away by the performance of the 980 and dismayed at the same time you can't go up a couple of frequencies which would really complete this radio. Uniden could triple their sales of this radio if the mod somehow "slipped" out.

I'm surprised nobody has figured it out yet. Maybe not enough demand due to all the export rigs that are already available. However, I see the 980 with extra channels, and running an outboard amp to be quite a killer combo. Cheap, too! I'd be willing to pay 10 bucks toward "my part" of the puzzle. Not sure how you would handle keeping up with the money and making it a legit deal, though!

I think we could find a way to do the funding pretty easy so that the fundraising would be transparent and legit.

Or maybe we just need to throw out the bounty first to find the person who can do the job and if they can prove a working version we put the dough together to get it released.

As I have a bigger stake in the pie I'd throw in $500 towards the pot.

I think $5000 or so would be a good reward for someone who is willing to put in the time to come up with the solution. Not to mention if it involves flashing radios etc they could build a long term business on it (think of the Chipswitch). If people were willing to pay $75 to have their 980 turned into a export etc someone would have a nice little source of income right there.

All we need now is a taker :)

I stated in another thread recently that I was going to purchase a Uniden 980 SIMPLY to see if I can modify it for channels. It's on order now thru Amazon.com. I know this one's a tough nut to crack, but I plan on mapping out the processor chip, the mixing scheme and such, to see if I can get it do extras.

Here's a rundown of what I want to do with a 980.

Modify for channels
unlock the clarifier
modify to install an IRF520 mosfet for the final to get rid of that awful Mitsubishi RD16HHF1 junk final.

The beep mod has been done already, so no need to tinker with that any.

~Cheers~

Think the FCC brought some pressure to bear on Uniden. Think the FCC did the same with H&Y and Copper with the e-chip/29xx radios. You cannot really count them out after all. These SMT radios are making the through hole part radios more and more valuable - every day. If we can keep them fixed in the mean time that is - then the mods for the Unidens/others are bound to show up eventually.

Hope someone comes up with the crack . . .

I'll donate as well.

Probably have more luck with posting our bounty on the Asian radio forums.

Gotta be some snot nosed 10 year old computer geek somewhere that can crack this.

the channel mod would be nice
a better choice of final
i would leave the clarifier alone, reason is someone is off freq then the next guy has to clarify him then we have 2 people off freq and becomes a cluster

I agree. The only open clarifier I would have says RIT and XIT

found this online. can anyone tell me what this "mod" does?

" 1) press the AM/USB/LSB & menu button together and turn radio on
2) Press menu? button 4 times until you see v*.** (mine says v1.03) you can display something else by pressing talkback button (possibly a checksum – not sure)
3 )Press the weather button until reset appears on lcd.
4) to enter the reset press menu button radio will restart on ch19"

just curious,
