    W1AW/1 working Out-Of-Band operators

I was kidding. Like speed limit signs seem to be suggested speed limits for many drivers, the 3 KHz guard bands are just suggested spectrum limits for some operators. Some ops don't realize the sideband energy goes beyond the dialed frequency.

    Motorola "codes"?

I appears to be a Motorola DPL code. Here is a CLP Series manual for a Motorola product. Pages 35 and 36 provide PL and DPL codes.

    W1AW/1 working Out-Of-Band operators

3 KHz is OK, it's the guys operating less than 3KHz from the band edge to operating one the band edge that is the problem. Example: 7175 KHz is the 40 meter phone band edge for General Class, thus the general should operate LSB at 7178 KHz or higher. Else, they may (depending on frequency...

Looking for a good external speaker

If you can find a used AES PCL-1 Pro (Amateur Electronics Supply) speaker, they were a gem. Specs: 5"W x 4.3"H x 3.2"D, 8 ohm, 20 Watt, 300 Hz to 5 KHz response, full magnetic shielding, and weighs 1.7 lbs. I have two and they make any radio (Fixed or Mobile) sound great.

    W1AW/1 working Out-Of-Band operators

Those are suggested band limits! Personally, I stay 3 KHz within the band limit to allow for sideband splatter. Let those guys get an OO notice. The OO's need something to do.

    Soldering Iron

Yes Doc, Should have been 0.062", 0.050", and 0.032" Kester 60/40 rosin core. I've used Radio Shack solder, but noticed the newer stuff not as good as the older solder. So it's back to Kester for me. Just a personal preference.

    Turner +2 mic battery

What was wrong with the standard 9 Volt battery that it was designed to use? Just interested.

    Soldering Iron

Regarding solder: Use either Kester 60/40 or 63/37 rosin core solder. Size is up to you, however, 0.62" or 0.50" would work for large components; maybe 0.32" or so for smaller components.

    HF antenna for mobiles

I use a Tarheel II with a Diamond K400 mount. Works 80 through 6 Meters and cost about 1/4 the cost of the unit you're looking at. Do the math and look at the specs.

    FT-950 SSB Transmit Audio

Just add a 1:1 Current Choke Balun inline either near the antenna or before the cable comes into the shack. Best cure for common mode current problems.

World Wide DX Net this sat??

Gary, Tried to contact you, but the pile-up on Mark/VK4AAP was too great. Did make contact with Mitsuru, JA9SJI in Toyama, Japan. Not as great a distance but not bad either. Maybe I'll have better luck working the forum members on Saturday if I have time. 73, Mike

    ARRL DX contest

I only had a little time to work anyone this afternoon, but did make a few QSO's on 10 Meters: EA7JZ ED7W CE1TT HG1S Using just an IC-7000 and an 80 Meter OCF at 20 ft. All 59+ signals.

    Performance increase question

You add 6 dB whenever you double the antenna height. You will improve the receiver performance by double (i.e., a 1 microvolt receiver will perform like a 0.5 microvolt receiver). Your 100 Watt transmitter will act like a 400 watt transmitter. This does not account for cable losses which will...

    mic wirering

I'm not familiar with the Realistic microphone, but the mic looks very similar to a Turner +2. The Turner +2 has a switch in the base to select either relay or electronics switching. Just guessing that if that switch exists then you may need to select one mode or the other. Is it possible...

Beams and vertical polarity mast no-no

I also remember guys mounting the beam about 20 or 30 degrees off vertical to prevent counter action from the mast. I believe that was in S9 Magazine years ago.

    MFJ 989C VS. 962D

For a few dollars more I'd go with the Palstar AT2K or AT2KD tuners. You'll also get 6 Meters and a brick that will tune a bottle cap. JMHO. If you need to stay with the MFJ brand, then I'd choose the MFJ-989D. It's a proven model.

    SAL Electronics Antennas

John, There's no secret. The OCF works on even harmonics, thus the 80 Meter OCF will also work on 40, 20, 10 ,and 5 Meters. (I put that 5 Meters in, as you can see from the VSWR curve it works out fine at the lower half of 6 Meters). The 80 Meter OCF work out well without a tuner on 17...

    coax choke question

Here's another site to look at: Broadband Baluns Go to the bottom of the page and use the choke information for the 10 Meter band if you need one for 11 Meter's and nearby bands. There are forms given for either RG-8 (RG-213) cable or RG-58 cable.
