Anytone Ares 2 with RFX95HD Install

I tried the Ares 2 with an RM Italy KL203-p amplifier just to compare. I could adjust the carrier up and down and it never pinched the carrier at any setting. It looks like the RFX is not a good match for the Ares 2, and I am not quite sure what is causing it. Maybe something to do with the input padding and gain compression? Or maybe that the RFX is a single transistor? Maybe I got a Bum RFX? If anyone tries this, and gets better results please let us know.

I think it is the padding on the input side, I think the guys at palomar mostly intended for it to go on cobra 29s with cliped limiters.

I have recently had 3 rfx kits blow the electrolytic capacitor in them shortly after powering up the unit the first time, after I change the cap no more problems. I run my bench at 14.8 because that is what many of the trucks provide to the radio and I like to tune at working voltage but that should not have blown the supposedly 16 volt cap/

I have an RFX95HD on my Galaxy 86v, works great, looks great on the scope in both AM and SSB. The Ares 2 is just different for some reason.

Just randomly ran across this.

This one looks great on the scope, I am not sure what adjustments he made if any for the punching carrier. Someone suggested that I could reduce the modulation so that is something to try I guess. I made a comment on this video, and the reply suggests that he didn't have this problem. I have another RFX unit that I can try too.

At the risk of making a big radio even bigger, I put an RFX95 on my Ares 2. The installation is not too hard, and the directions that come with it are pretty good and fairly easy to follow.

When you take the heat sink off, you will find that the transistor mounting screws thread into it. I ended up buying a small nut assortment from Amazon. Don't tighten them too tight, or you will crack the ceramic insulators. Firmly snug will do it.

I know I am the minority voice that is not a fan of the RFX series of bolt on amps on this forum! That said way to go! You did it yourself and you got an outcome you can live with! Cheer's! All the best!

I just ordered a Radioddity version. I am thinking about hooking it up to a 1 or 2 MRF454 amp.

I am thinking about turning it down as low as it can go and then using the built in Asymetric modulation setting or NPC setting.

If I only use it that way on AM it should be ok. In my area CB is dead outside of the random die hard American trucker it is not a thing anymore. Since no one has TV's that are anaolog anymore.

I hope that there is a way to program it so when I go to SSB it dissengauges this with out having to go through the menu. If not I will have to change my useage since I talk on SSB 85% of the time even mobile!

For the money though I could not say no. We are basicly talking 1991 Uniden Grant XL money!

I do wish he would have showed us the NPC turned down as low as it would go on AM.

I am sure that some of what was not shown was due to price point since this radio is so cheap. Not enough meat on the bone for someone making a living selling modified radio's!

That is not meant as a insult to this guy either just a fact of business. Imagine someone brought a a Galaxy 99V alternative with out of the box no need to mod NPC etc.. for $149 not a great thing to carry and sell.

I would be happy to turn that power down to anything more than 1/4 watt with NPC and send it into a single bipolar or dual bipolar amp.

I have a 10 pack of the old Palomar "7030?" and Max Mod when they first came out with them.

I would be intersted in knowing how anyones mod's and the factory NPC has turned out!!

My single transistor amps will key and latch nicely as long as I have 1/4 watt carrier! That said it is only good in NPC if it can be made not to pinch at a reasonable price point!

Cheer's!
