best 11meter vertical ever, period.

I've had my own issues with some of Zman's comments, but I would hope we could still allow him his opinion.

You have had issues with my comments dating way back to the days of Uncle Jims page...

ask my buddy master chief if he still thinks the sigma is just a 1/2wave.

i know of at least two people on here that can make a sigma4 outperform any 5/8wave.

Oh really now..... Id like to meet them. But for now my Sigma 4 resides rotting away in the weeds and vines along the back fence row.
However if i believed that a 1/2 wave J pole works better than my 5/8 wave then id pack a bong with some good weed!!!!(y)

Can you or some one explain what you are talking about.

I like the gainmaster for various reasons, even though I don't own one, but how can the GM, a vertical antenna which is supposed to have 1-2 dBi over a 5/8 (which would put it around 4-5 dbi ) be better than a 3 element beam which has about a 9dbi gain.

May be I am missing something here so please let me know, thanks in advance. good day.

It is in reference to an asinine statement that 4040 made:

[Quote:fortymobile' timestamp='1318723837' post='642109']
From all the test i do switching back and forth between the to is 1/2 or 1 s .....i would say it will whoop the snot out of a 3 element all day long i don't care what the propagation is but it will give a 4 element a run for its money... [close Quote}

I used to respect his dedication to the hobby but that statement voids it.For whatever reason some clueless people admire and look up to him and chances are they will take what he says as gospel. There are plenty of places/people to learn about our hobby from but Scottie is not one of them.Maybe I'm of base here and his Gainmaster "will whoop the snot out of a 3 element all day long", when it's hooked to his Nextel.

...unless it's a miracle.

So, why am I consistently getting 10 & 20-over s9 reports from European stations while using only 100w pep on the Gainmaster? I've never had that kind of consistent high-level reports on anything I've run since the Quad, and I used to hit the Quad with 500w when I was DXing, and the conditions were better during that sunspot cycle than they are now.

I don't claim to understand why this is happening, but when it comes to DX, the Gainmaster is surprising the crud outta me!

In fact, it's quite possible that it could outperform a 3 el Yagi on DX if the Yagi isn't high enough to have as low a TOA so that the Gainmaster vertical is getting more RF to where it needs to be with fewer bounces.

"Needle Bender is planning what he calls a once and for all, beyond all doubt, type demonstration for how the Sigma 4 works in the cone area."

absolutely no disrespect to NB , but one test done by anyone is hardly conclusive across the board . having said that i have FAITH NB will get the results that the commercial makers of the sigma style claim .

Ask Marconi if he thinks my test will be at all conclusive. I've emailed him the video details but I believe(hope) he's going to keep the cat in the bag until it's uploaded. ;)

My best guess, (from reading what seems like a million hours of posts!) is that the cone doesn't radiate but that the top 1/2 wave is above a 1/4 wave null, like the Penetrator & I10k are both a 3/8 wave above a 1/4 wave null.

I feel that the 1/4 wave null below the top radiator in each case provides a low TOA, and having 33% more radiator on the Vector design should provide gain over a bottom fed 5/8.

I might be wrong, but that's what I'm expecting my test to show. I hope I am wrong because if the whole thing radiates I'm going to replace the Gainmaster with one (including an upgraded 10kw gamma) so I can run the big amp through it on 10m, and relegate the Gainmaster to a camping antenna.

looking forward to your results . be sure to tell us how you did the testing to please .
if you've got the vector why not put it up and let the difference in tx/rx tell you which antenna is better for your install ?

It's a biaaaatch to climb that tree!

Booty you'll fully understand the video once uploaded (after I make it that is) - I have a busted gamma bracket (crappy pot metal) so I still need to borrow one from a friend's parts pile.

Isn't the Sigma IV a 7/8 wl (in length) antenna? Isn't the ground plane/cone of the Sigma IV 1/4 wl long? Doesn't the diagram that Booty put up show a 5/8 wl length of antenna radiating?

7/8 - 2/8(or '1/4') = 5/8?

Just wondering . . .

HEY HEY HEY, ONE MF'r at a time, please! ;)

First we'll get through that 3/4 wave, then the 7/8 - down the road.

Don't confuse me with the facts!

IIRC ....... the sigma 4 had a 3/4 wl vertical with 7 or 8 ft basket elements . the sirio lw-150 had a 31 1/2 ft vertical with about the same basket element lengths and the 4000 has 106 inch basket elements and a vertical almost 28 ft long . all use a 30 inch loop .

the specs for the one in the radiation pic are ......

i have to agree with you on one thing here only,,,on dx anything is possible<More audio>

I'm hesitant at best to trust any form of DX contact test for measuring. To many variables that you simply cannot account for. Perhaps all those random variables simply added up to much better conditions.
